Pig-butchering fraud has reached Oman's professional and expatriate community, with victims targeted through WhatsApp and Instagram by operators who pose as successful Gulf professionals or diaspora Omanis. The scheme combines romance and crypto investment fraud into a single, highly effective trap.
Oman's rising digital adoption and high average income make it an increasingly attractive market for the organised syndicates that run these operations.
How this scam works on Oman
A charismatic stranger initiates contact via Instagram or WhatsApp, expressing interest in the victim's profile. Over several weeks, they build a warm relationship, mentioning their own success in cryptocurrency trading. They offer to share their strategy through an exclusive platform.
The victim deposits a small sum that appears to grow rapidly. A test withdrawal of a small amount succeeds. Larger deposits follow. When a significant withdrawal is attempted, a compliance fee or capital gains tax is demanded proportional to the balance. After payment, another requirement appears. Both the platform and the 'partner' then vanish.
In Oman, some operators target the large South Asian expat community in their native languages alongside Arabic-speaking Omanis.

Frequently asked questions
My CMA-check shows the platform is not listed. Does that mean it is definitely a scam?
If a platform claims to be regulated but does not appear in the CMA register, that is a very strong indicator of fraud. Stop depositing immediately and report to the CMA and the Royal Oman Police.
