Pig-butchering scams have become one of the most financially damaging online frauds in Poland. The Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego (KNF), Poland's financial regulator, maintains one of Europe's most active public warning lists, adding dozens of fraudulent crypto and Forex platforms monthly as criminal syndicates specifically target Polish investors.
Fraudsters contact Polish victims through Facebook groups dedicated to personal finance, WhatsApp and — increasingly — through Polish-language Instagram and TikTok accounts projecting an aspirational investment lifestyle. Polish-speaking operators in South-East Asian fraud compounds handle initial contact.
How this scam works on Poland
Victims are contacted by a person presenting as a Polish financial consultant or a successful entrepreneur living in Switzerland or Dubai. After several weeks of friendly conversation, the 'consultant' introduces a trading platform described as licensed by the KNF and praised in community reviews. Reviews are fabricated.
Deposits are made by BLIK (Poland's instant mobile payment system), standard bank transfer (PLN or EUR) or crypto purchased at Polish Bitcoin ATMs. The platform shows growing balances in PLN. Test withdrawals of small amounts are sometimes permitted early to build trust.
Withdrawal is later blocked by a 'podatek od zysku' (profit tax) demand or 'KNF verification fee', invented to extract further payments before the platform disappears.
Common red flags
- Investment platform not on the KNF public register at knf.gov.pl
- Contact through a Polish finance Facebook group pivots to investment advice
- BLIK or bank-transfer request to an unfamiliar account for 'investment deposit'
- Promised monthly returns of 15–30% with no documented risk
- Withdrawal blocked by invented KNF compliance or tax requirements
- Customer support only via WhatsApp or Telegram in Polish
How to protect yourself
- Check the KNF register and warning list at knf.gov.pl before investing
- Never send BLIK payments to contacts you met online for investment purposes
- Consult a licensed doradca inwestycyjny (investment adviser) registered with the KNF

How do I check if an investment platform is licensed in Poland?
Search the KNF's official registers at knf.gov.pl and its dedicated warnings list ('Lista ostrzeżeń publicznych KNF'). Any firm absent from the register or appearing on the warnings list should be avoided.
