Romance blackmail is reported among Bahrain's diverse resident population. Scammers create attractive social media profiles, develop romantic relationships, and obtain intimate images before pivoting to extortion. Bahrain's conservative social norms and the potential professional and immigration consequences of exposure increase the leverage scammers hold over victims.
Expats in particular may fear that a scandal could cost them their residence permit or employment, making them more likely to pay rather than report.
How this scam works on Bahrain
A fake profile — usually of an attractive professional — initiates contact on Instagram, WhatsApp, or a dating app. After a period of affectionate messaging, the conversation shifts toward intimate content. Once usable material is obtained, the scammer reveals that they have saved or recorded everything and demands payment — usually via bank transfer or crypto — within hours.
If the victim pays, demands escalate. Scammers often reference specific workplace or family contacts to demonstrate they know how to cause maximum damage. Victims in Gulf countries are sometimes told that the material will be submitted to local authorities as well as shared socially, adding a legal dimension to the threat.
Common red flags

- Resistance to spontaneous live video calls
- Sudden demand for payment after any intimate exchange
- Mention of specific colleagues, family members, or employers by name in the threat

- Demands for payment via untraceable methods
How to protect yourself
- Never share intimate material with someone you have not met and verified in person
- Reverse-image-search profile photos before developing trust
- Do not pay — paying confirms you will respond and escalates demands
- Preserve all threatening communications as evidence
- Seek legal advice about your rights in Bahrain before deciding how to respond
How to report it
- Report to the Bahrain Police Cybercrime Unit with all screenshots
- Report the profile to the social media platform's abuse team
- Contact the Stop NCII service to block intimate images on major platforms
