Sextortion is a rapidly growing cybercrime in Indonesia, tracked by Bareskrim and reported across all regions. Strong cultural norms around family honor and social reputation make the threat of intimate image exposure highly effective as coercion, and many victims pay rather than report out of shame.
Fraudsters use Instagram, Tinder, Twitter/X, and Indonesian dating platforms to create attractive fake profiles and build relationships before the extortion phase begins.
How this scam works on Indonesia
After establishing an online romantic connection — sometimes within days, sometimes over weeks — the fraudster maneuvers the conversation toward intimate video calls or content exchange. Using recording software, they capture intimate material and immediately shift to extortion: pay via bank transfer (BCA/BRI/Mandiri), GoPay, OVO, or cryptocurrency or the content will be sent to the victim's Instagram or WhatsApp contacts, employer, and family.
A rapid variant targets men through Instagram DMs: an attractive profile sends an intimate video first and then claims the victim must pay to prevent the 'accidental' exchange from being shared more widely. This relies on shock and confusion to generate quick payment.
Minors are also targeted through online games such as Mobile Legends or Free Fire, where fraudsters pose as peers before escalating conversations to WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions
Is there legal protection for sextortion victims in Indonesia?
Yes. Indonesia's Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) criminalizes the non-consensual distribution of intimate content. Law enforcement can pursue perpetrators, and victims should report rather than pay — paying funds criminal behavior and rarely stops the extortion.
