Romance blackmail and sextortion are well-documented in Israel, where victims are targeted through dating apps, Facebook, and Instagram. The scam exploits the relatively small and interconnected nature of Israeli professional and social networks, where compromising images sent to an employer or family WhatsApp group could cause disproportionate harm.
Politically and socially prominent individuals have been targeted in highly calculated operations, and ordinary citizens face industrialised versions of the same approach.
How this scam works on Israel
A victim matches with an attractive profile on a dating app or receives a message on Facebook from someone who shares cultural or professional references — a connection to Tel Aviv tech circles, army service, or a shared city background. Video calls quickly escalate toward intimacy, at which point screenshots are captured.
Demand for payment — typically through bank transfer or crypto — arrives with threat to distribute material to the victim's WhatsApp contacts or LinkedIn connections. The demand is often time-limited to prevent the victim from seeking advice.
In more elaborate versions, the scammer poses for weeks as a genuine romantic partner before the blackmail reveal, having extracted far more sensitive information during the relationship period.
Common red flags
- Online contact who quickly shares personal Israeli cultural markers to seem authentic
- Video call steered toward intimacy unusually quickly
- Threat to distribute content to named contacts or employers
- Demand for bank transfer or crypto within 24–48 hours
- Profile photos pass superficial scrutiny but contact refuses unscripted live video
- Second or third demand after initial payment
How to protect yourself
- Never share intimate content with people you have not met in person and verified thoroughly
- If targeted, do not pay — report to Israel Police immediately
- Preserve all communications as evidence before blocking the scammer
- Alert a trusted contact to the situation so the threat of disclosure loses its power
- Consider locking down social media contact lists temporarily to reduce scammer leverage
- Seek psychological support — these crimes cause genuine trauma
How to report it
