Sextortion is a growing cybercrime in Japan, with the National Police Agency reporting significant increases in cases. Japan's strong culture of professional and social reputation makes the threat of intimate image distribution particularly effective as a coercion tool, as victims fear social and professional consequences.
Fraudsters target Japanese users on Instagram, Twitter/X, and marriage matchmaking apps, using convincing Japanese-language profiles and culturally informed conversation to establish connections before the extortion phase.
How this scam works on Japan
After building a connection, often on a Japanese konkatsu or dating app, the fraudster pushes toward video call intimacy and records the session. The subsequent demand arrives via Line or DM: pay ¥[amount] in crypto or bank transfer or the content will be sent to the victim's Line friends, employer, or school.
Another variant involves a stranger sending an intimate video via SNS DM and then immediately claiming the victim has 'received' their content and must pay to keep it private — a shock tactic designed to exploit confusion.
Japanese men in their 20s–40s are frequently targeted due to their relative digital activity and the predictable damage that intimate image exposure would cause in professional and family environments.
Common red flags
- Online contact escalates rapidly to intimate conversation on Line or SNS
- Video calls requested on unfamiliar platforms where recording is easy
- Sudden demand for yen payment threatening content distribution to contacts
- Payment demanded in cryptocurrency to prevent tracing
- Contact refuses any in-person meeting or verifiable identity confirmation
How to protect yourself
- Never share intimate content with someone you have not met in person and thoroughly verified
- Do not pay — payment rarely ends the demands
- Preserve all evidence: screenshots, Line conversations, payment demands
- Contact police immediately — you are the victim of a crime, not a participant in one
- Access support through Japan's Safer Internet Association (safer-internet.or.jp) for confidential guidance
How to report it
- Report to the National Police Agency at npa.go.jp or local police
- File with SAFER INTERNET at safer-internet.or.jp for online safety support
- Report the SNS or Line account through the platform's reporting function
Frequently asked questions
Is it illegal to distribute intimate images without consent in Japan?
Yes. Japan's Act on Prevention of Revenge Porn (不正競争防止法 provisions and the リベンジポルノ防止法) criminalizes non-consensual distribution of intimate images. Perpetrators can be prosecuted, and victims can seek police assistance for content removal and prosecution.
