Romance blackmail is reported across Kuwait, where the social consequences of intimate image exposure can be severe. Fraudsters use fake Instagram, Snapchat, or dating app profiles to establish romantic online relationships, obtain intimate material, and then demand payment to prevent sharing it with the victim's contacts.
Expats who depend on their employer for residency status are particularly vulnerable to threats of workplace disclosure, adding an immigration dimension to the extortion.
How this scam works on Kuwait
A convincing fake profile initiates contact and builds affection over days. Intimate images or video is obtained through a video call or direct request. The scammer immediately pivots: 'Pay me or I send this to your contacts.' A list of the victim's friends or family is displayed to demonstrate leverage.
Payment is demanded via bank transfer or crypto. If the victim pays, demands escalate. Scammers specifically reference Kuwaiti social and legal norms to maximise fear. Some threats include submitting the material to local authorities as well as sharing it socially.
Refusing to pay often results in a brief escalation followed by the scammer moving on — paying rarely stops the demands.

Frequently asked questions
I am an expat. Could reporting this to police put my residency at risk?
Seek confidential legal advice first. You are the victim of a crime. Reporting proactively generally offers stronger protection than silence. A Kuwaiti lawyer can advise on the specific circumstances.
