Viber romance blackmail exploits the platform's contact list structure — because Viber shows who among your phone contacts uses the app, a scammer who gains access to your account or your trust can credibly threaten to contact specific people in your network.
The perceived intimacy of Viber as a personal messaging tool makes relationship-building faster and the threat of exposure to known contacts feel more concrete.
How this scam works on Viber
A scammer establishes a romantic Viber connection through a random message or referral. After building emotional intimacy, they encourage the sharing of personal or intimate images or information. The scammer then uses this material to demand payment, threatening to forward the content to the victim's Viber contacts.
Some variants involve the scammer performing an intimate video call and recording it without the victim's knowledge, then demanding payment for the recording not to be distributed. The threat may be accompanied by a list of the victim's Viber contacts to demonstrate that the scammer knows who they are and how to reach them.
Payment is requested via cryptocurrency or wire transfer, with the threat continuing regardless of payment.
Common red flags
- Romantic contact who encourages intimate exchanges unusually quickly
- Any request for intimate images or content from someone known only via Viber
- Sudden payment demand accompanied by intimate content as leverage
- Threat to contact specific named people in your Viber list
- Request for payment escalating after initial compliance
- Contact who is never available for spontaneous unscheduled video calls
How to protect yourself
- Never share intimate content with unverified Viber contacts
- Do not pay extortion demands — payment nearly always results in escalation
- Preserve all evidence of threats and contact law enforcement
- Consider proactively informing close contacts so they are aware if the scammer follows through
- Restrict your Viber visibility settings so unknown contacts cannot see your profile information
How to report it
- Report the blackmailing contact via Viber's in-app block and report feature
- File a report with your national police or cybercrime unit — this is criminal extortion
- Contact the relevant support organisations for intimate image abuse in your country
Frequently asked questions
Will paying stop a Viber blackmailer from sharing content?
Rarely. Payment demonstrates willingness to comply and almost always results in repeat demands. Law enforcement involvement is the more effective response.
