Facebook's native commerce features — Facebook Shops, Marketplace, and targeted advertising — provide fraudulent sellers with powerful tools to reach consumers at scale. The platform's trust associations, built through personal social connections, can make Facebook commerce feel safer than it actually is.
Facebook Marketplace in particular combines local and national listings in a format that consumers associate with peer-to-peer trustworthiness, which fraudulent professional sellers exploit to appear more legitimate.
How this scam works on Facebook
Fraudulent sellers set up Facebook Shops or Marketplace listings with attractive product imagery and compelling descriptions. Facebook Ads may be used to drive traffic from targeted demographic groups. The checkout either occurs within Facebook or through an external website.
After payment, orders are not fulfilled, or cheap substitutes arrive. Some operations focus on high-demand seasonal items or trending products, launching around peak shopping periods to maximise order volumes before disappearing.
Facebook Messenger is used for customer service, allowing the seller to delay and deflect until the chargeback window closes.
Common red flags
- Facebook Shop or Marketplace seller has very limited review history despite appearing established

- Seller insists on payment outside Facebook's buyer-protected checkout
- Seller communication via Messenger is delayed, evasive, or uses scripted responses
- Business Page was created recently despite appearing to be an established brand
- Product listing images appear identical to those on legitimate retailers' sites
