Snapchat's social commerce is less formalised than that of TikTok or Instagram, meaning many purchases driven by Snapchat content occur on external sites with no platform-level buyer protection. This makes Snapchat-driven fraudulent shops particularly difficult to dispute.
The platform's young, style-conscious audience is heavily targeted with fraudulent fashion, beauty, and lifestyle product promotions delivered through Stories that disappear before most victims realise they have been defrauded.
How this scam works on Snapchat
Accounts post promotional Stories for products at attractive prices, directing followers to a bio link or DM order process. After payment — typically through an informal method — the Story expires and the seller becomes unresponsive.
Some operations use Snapchat to drive traffic to external stores that have a professional appearance but no genuine fulfilment capability. Victims discover the fraud only after their order fails to arrive, by which time the promotional Story content has expired.
Some sellers use the Snapchat creator model to gain legitimacy by positioning themselves as a small business personality before running order scams.
Common red flags
- Purchase process is conducted entirely through Snapchat DMs with no formal checkout
- Payment is requested through a peer payment app or gift card
- Promotional Story content expires without a permanent record of the product claims
- The seller has no website or contact information outside Snapchat
- Price is significantly below what comparable items cost on legitimate platforms
- Account does not respond after payment is sent
How to protect yourself
- Screenshot product Stories and all communication before making payment
- Insist on a formal checkout with buyer protection rather than informal payment
- Verify the seller's legitimacy through independent research outside Snapchat
- Never pay by informal transfer for goods you have not yet received
- Report unresponsive sellers to Snapchat and file a fraud complaint with your payment provider
How to report it
- Report the Snapchat account using the in-app report feature
- File a dispute with your payment provider for any informal transfer where goods were not received
- Submit a complaint to your national consumer protection authority
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no buyer protection for Snapchat purchases?
Snapchat does not have a native commerce platform with integrated buyer protection in the same way as TikTok Shop or Instagram Checkout. When you purchase through a Snap-driven link or DM, protection depends entirely on the payment method you use — credit cards offer the most recourse.
