Task Scams in Laos
How micro-task fraud targeting Lao residents extracts cryptocurrency deposits through fake online job platforms.
Part of: Task Scams
Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
Task scams reach Lao residents via Facebook and messaging apps, promising easy income for simple digital tasks. The schemes are particularly effective in Laos because they require no specialist skills or foreign language ability, and they promise income without leaving home.
The pattern is consistent: small real payments demonstrate the system works, then a cryptocurrency deposit requirement is introduced as the victim tries to access higher-paying work. That deposit is never returned, and the visible earnings on the platform are entirely fictional.
How this scam works on Laos
A Lao resident is invited via Facebook or a messaging app to join a group where people describe earning money by completing simple tasks — liking posts, writing product reviews, or rating apps. They register on a linked website and complete initial tasks, receiving a small payment almost immediately.
As they progress, they are told a deposit in cryptocurrency or via a money transfer service is required to unlock the next tier. If deposited, the funds are retained. Further deposits are demanded using the excuse that the account balance is locked and needs to be 'activated' or 'verified.' The platform's support team is scripted to keep the victim paying.

Frequently asked questions
Are task scams in Laos connected to the scam compounds?
Some task scam platforms are operated from scam compound infrastructure in the Mekong region, though many operate independently from elsewhere. Regardless of origin, the mechanics are identical and the outcome for victims is the same. Never pay a deposit to any task platform regardless of where you believe it is based.
