Task Scams on Job Boards
Fake gig-style job listings on employment sites promise pay for simple online tasks, but require victims to invest money to 'unlock' earnings that never materialise.

Task scams are advertised on job boards and freelance platforms as simple, flexible online work — rating products, watching videos, clicking ads, or completing surveys. The initial promise is that pay is earned per task completed. The listing looks like a legitimate micro-task or gig-economy opportunity.
The scam reveals itself after initial tasks are completed: to continue earning, or to withdraw accumulated balance, the victim must first make a deposit. Each deposit unlocks a new 'level' with better pay — but no money ever flows back to the worker. The platform keeps collecting deposits until the victim realises the fraud.
How this scam works on Job Boards
A victim applies through a job board and is onboarded to a separate app or website. They complete a handful of tasks and see their balance grow. When they try to withdraw, they are told their balance is too low and they must deposit a fee to upgrade. After depositing, a new barrier appears — another deposit required for the next tier. This cycle repeats until the victim stops paying.
Some operations combine task scams with pig-butchering elements: a 'mentor' assigned to the victim builds a personal relationship and uses emotional pressure to encourage continued deposits.
Common red flags
- Job listing promising easy pay for very simple repetitive tasks with unusually high rates
- Onboarding shifts you to an app or platform not affiliated with the job board
- Deposits or top-ups are required to access earnings or advance to higher-paying tasks
- A personal 'account manager' or mentor monitors your progress unusually closely
- Withdrawal is blocked pending fees, taxes, or verification payments
- The platform has no verifiable company registration or physical address
How to protect yourself
- Research any platform you are directed to from a job listing independently
- Never pay fees or deposits to access wages or gig earnings — legitimate platforms do not work this way
- Be sceptical of any job that promises unusually high pay for trivial tasks
- Stop all deposits immediately if withdrawal is blocked, regardless of how much you have already paid
- Report the platform to the job board and your fraud authority before losing more money
How to report it
- Report the job listing to the platform's moderation team
- Report to Action Fraud, the FTC, or your national fraud authority
- If cryptocurrency was deposited, report to your national financial regulator
Frequently asked questions
I already deposited money — can I get it back?
Recovery is difficult and not guaranteed. Stop depositing immediately — more deposits will not unlock previous earnings. Report to your fraud authority and bank. Some card issuers can dispute payments, though cryptocurrency transfers are generally unrecoverable.
