Pix (Brazil) Scams
Pix scams — instant-transfer fraud, fake QR codes, and support impersonation in Brazil.
Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
Pix, Brazil's instant payment system operated by the Banco Central do Brasil, processes transactions around the clock in seconds. While its speed and accessibility benefit millions of Brazilians, the same instant and irreversible nature makes it attractive to fraudsters who exploit social engineering, fake customer-service calls, and malicious QR codes.
This guide covers the scam types most reported on Pix, the warning signs, and the steps to protect your account.
Common scams using Pix (Brazil)
Bank impersonation calls requesting Pix transfers
Callers posing as bank fraud teams claim the customer's account is at risk and instruct them to transfer funds to a 'safe key' the scammer controls.
Fake Pix QR codes
Altered QR codes displayed on invoices or websites redirect Pix payments to the scammer's account instead of the legitimate recipient.
Pix limit-increase social engineering
Scammers pose as bank staff to guide victims through increasing their Pix limits before transferring large sums out.
Marketplace Pix non-delivery
Online sellers accept Pix payment but never ship goods, knowing the transfer is instant and hard to dispute.
Common red flags
- Unexpected calls from your bank asking you to make a Pix transfer to protect your account
- QR codes received via WhatsApp or email from sellers you have not verified
- Requests to increase your Pix daily limit at someone else's prompting
- Urgency or fear tactics about account freezing or legal action
- Pix key details that do not match the business or person you expect to pay
How to protect yourself
- Verify the recipient name displayed after entering a Pix key before confirming any transfer
- Set a Pix nighttime limit (limite noturno) in your banking app to cap exposure during off-hours
- Hang up on any call about your account and call your bank back on the number on your card
- Inspect QR codes carefully — check the displayed CPF or CNPJ matches the expected recipient
- Enable transaction notifications so you are alerted instantly to any Pix activity
How to report it
- Report fraud to the Banco Central via the Registrato portal or through your bank
- Call your bank immediately to attempt to identify and freeze the receiving account
- File a police report (Boletim de Ocorrencia) — banks may require it to investigate
Frequently asked questions
Can a Pix transfer be reversed if I was deceived?
Pix transfers are instant and generally irreversible by design. The Mecanismo Especial de Devolucao (MED) allows banks to attempt recovery in fraud cases, but success depends on the receiving account still holding funds. Report immediately.
