UPI (India) Scams
UPI scams — collect requests, fake QR codes, and support impersonation in India.
Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed digital payments for hundreds of millions of people — and attracted fraudsters who exploit its instant, near-irreversible transfers. Scams on UPI often rely on victims confusing a collect request (where money leaves their account) with a receive notification, or on fake QR codes that misdirect payments.
This guide covers the UPI fraud types reported most frequently, the warning signs, and the protections available.
Common scams using UPI (India)
Fake collect-request fraud
Scammers send a UPI collect request and tell the victim to 'approve' it to receive money — approving actually sends money out.
Fake QR codes for payment receipt
Sellers are tricked into scanning a QR code to 'receive' payment; scanning actually initiates an outward transfer.
KYC expiry impersonation
SMS or calls claim the user's UPI or bank KYC must be updated immediately via a link or by sharing an OTP.
Customer care number fraud
Victims search for bank or UPI support numbers and reach scammer-operated lines that harvest account details under the guise of helping.
Common red flags
- A request to 'approve' or 'accept' a UPI notification in order to receive money — you do not need to approve anything to receive
- QR codes sent by buyers to merchants claiming to represent payment
- SMS or calls about KYC expiry with links or requests for OTP
- Customer care numbers found via search engines that are not on the bank's official website
- Urgency, threats of account freezing, or promises of large sums contingent on a UPI action
How to protect yourself
- Remember: you only approve or scan to send money — no action is required to receive
- Never share UPI PIN, OTP, or Aadhaar details over phone or via links
- Verify customer care numbers only from the official bank website or app
- Set a transaction limit and enable MPIN for every transfer in your UPI app
- Report and block unknown collect requests without approving them
How to report it
- Report UPI fraud to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call 1930
- Contact your bank's UPI support to dispute and attempt to freeze the receiving account
- File a complaint with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) at npci.org.in
Frequently asked questions
Can UPI payments be reversed if I was scammed?
UPI transfers are instant and generally irreversible. Report to the NPCI, your bank, and cybercrime.gov.in immediately — coordinated action can sometimes freeze the recipient account before funds are withdrawn.
