Is a Microsoft or Apple support call about my computer a scam?
Yes. Microsoft, Apple, and other tech companies do not make unsolicited calls about viruses or problems on your device.

Explanation
Tech-support scammers call claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, or a security company, saying they have detected a virus, hack, or suspicious activity on your computer. Their goal is to get you to install remote-access software, pay for fake 'support', or hand over bank details.
Microsoft and Apple have no mechanism to monitor individual customers' devices and proactively call them. If there were a genuine issue with your device, it would manifest locally — not arrive as a cold call. These calls are easy to fake because caller ID can show any name.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited call claiming your computer has a virus or been hacked
- Caller identifies as Microsoft, Apple, BT, or a security company you didn't contact
- Request to install software like TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or a browser plugin
- Urgency — 'your device will be locked/wiped if you don't act now'
- Request for payment by gift card, wire transfer, or crypto for 'support'
- Caller tells you to stay on the line while you take the steps
What to do now
- Hang up immediately
- Do not install any software the caller suggested
- If you already granted access, disconnect from the internet and follow remote-access scam steps
- Change passwords for banking and key accounts from a clean device
- Report the call to your national fraud service
Frequently asked questions
What if my screen showed a warning pop-up with a number to call?
Browser-based pop-ups claiming your computer is infected and giving a number to call are also a scam tactic. Close the browser (use Task Manager if needed) and run a scan with legitimate security software.
I already let them access my computer. What should I do?
Disconnect from the internet immediately, uninstall any software they installed, change your passwords from a different device, and contact your bank. See our remote-access scam guide for full steps.
