A Temu seller asked me to pay or take a refund outside the app. Should I do it?
No. Temu is a legitimate marketplace, but anyone messaging you can ask you to step outside it, and that step is where protection disappears. Keep the payment and the refund inside the app, on the original payment method, and report the request.

Explanation
On any large marketplace, most items come from third-party sellers, and a small number will try to move you off the platform. The request usually appears right after you ask about an item, a bulk order, or a refund. The pitch sounds reasonable: a direct bank transfer, a payment app, gift card codes, or crypto, offered in exchange for a discount, faster shipping, or a refund that supposedly cannot be processed in the app. It works because the conversation began inside an app you already trust, so the person feels vetted. They are not vetted for anything that happens outside it. Once you pay off-platform there is no order record, no in-app dispute to open, and the payment types they name are chosen precisely because they are difficult to reverse. The check that settles it: a genuine refund for a marketplace order goes back through the platform to your original payment method. If someone needs you to leave the app for it to work, that is your answer.
Common red flags
- A request to pay by bank transfer, payment app, gift card codes, or crypto
- A refund offered only if you first send money, a fee, or your bank login
- Pressure to continue the conversation on a messaging app or by email instead of in-app chat
- A discount that only applies if you pay directly
- An excuse that the platform is holding funds, is glitching, or charges the seller too much
- A refund amount larger than you paid, with a request to send the difference back
What to do now
- Decline and keep every message inside the app so there is a record
- Check your order and refund status yourself in the official app rather than trusting what the seller says
- Report the seller and the conversation through the in-app report option
- If you already sent money, contact your bank or the payment provider immediately and ask about a recall or chargeback, and understand that they decide the outcome
- If you shared card, bank, or login details, freeze the card and change the password and any reused passwords
- Open a dispute or contact platform support about the order itself, and keep screenshots of the messages
Frequently asked questions
I already sent the money. Can I get it back?
Sometimes, and it is worth acting fast, but nobody can promise it. Bank transfers can occasionally be recalled if the receiving bank still holds the funds, and card payments may qualify for a chargeback. Gift card codes and crypto are the hardest to recover. Contact your bank or payment provider today, explain plainly that you were deceived into paying, and ask what recovery route exists. Your bank or card scheme makes the decision, so give them the messages, dates, and amounts.
Is the marketplace responsible if a third-party seller does this?
Platforms generally offer buyer protection for orders placed and paid for through the app, which is exactly why keeping everything in-app matters. If you paid inside the app and the item never arrived or was not as described, open a dispute and let support review it. If you paid outside the app, the platform usually cannot see the transaction at all, so there is nothing for it to refund. Report the seller regardless, because it helps the platform act on the account.
