Immediate actions and reporting steps after losing money to a Cash App scam, including how to dispute a payment.
Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
First 10 minutes
- Open Cash App and check whether the payment is still pending — pending payments can sometimes be cancelled
- If the payment has completed, tap the transaction and use 'Request a Refund' to put the dispute on record
- Contact Cash App support via the app or at cash.app/help
- If you linked a bank account or card, call your bank to report the fraud
- Stop all contact with the scammer and do not send additional funds
First 24 hours
- File a report with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and submit an in-app report to Cash App
- Change your Cash App PIN and your linked email and banking passwords
- Check your Cash App settings for any linked accounts or cards you do not recognise
Contact your bank or payment provider
- If you funded the transfer from a debit card, contact your bank to discuss a potential chargeback
- Ask your bank to flag your account for unusual activity
- If your bank credentials were also shared, ask for account security review
Evidence to preserve
- Screenshot the transaction in Cash App including the recipient's Cashtag and amount
- Save all messages, DMs, or emails from the scammer
- Note dates and times of all contacts and transfers
Secure your accounts and devices
- Change your Cash App PIN and enable security lock
- Remove any unknown linked bank accounts or cards from Cash App
- Enable two-factor authentication on your linked email account
Report it
- Report to your national fraud/cybercrime service
- Report to the platform, bank, or provider involved
- Keep any reference numbers you're given
Cash App payments are generally instant and peer-to-peer, which makes them hard to reverse. However, if the payment was funded by a linked debit card rather than a Cash App balance, your bank may be able to raise a chargeback in some circumstances. Acting within minutes of the fraud gives you the best window.
Beware of accounts on social media claiming to be Cash App support — official Cash App support only operates through the app itself. Any offer to recover lost Cash App funds in exchange for a fee is a recovery scam.
Frequently asked questions
Can Cash App reverse a completed payment?
Cash App can ask the recipient to return funds but cannot force a reversal. If the recipient refuses, your best option is a bank chargeback if the transfer was funded by a linked debit card.
Is there a real Cash App support phone number?
Cash App support is handled through the app. Any phone number found through a web search claiming to be Cash App support is likely a scam.
