Discord communities built around productivity, gaming, or creative tools are frequently targeted by operators promoting subscription-trap apps as must-have additions. Because recommendations in niche servers come from apparently trusted community members, users are less likely to scrutinise the app before downloading.
Bot accounts and compromised member accounts post app links with enthusiastic testimonials, driving installs before moderators can remove the content. The subscription charge arrives via the app store, making the source less obvious.
How this scam works on Discord
A Discord server member — often a bot impersonating a regular user — posts about an app that solves a common problem for the community, such as a screen recorder, AI writing tool, or gaming overlay. The post includes a direct App Store or Google Play link and several supporting replies from accomplice accounts.
On downloading and opening the app, the user encounters an immediate subscription prompt. The prompt is styled to appear as a normal onboarding step, with the subscription fee displayed briefly and the 'Start Free Trial' button prominently positioned. The trial defaults to auto-renew.
After charging, the app may delete itself from the store or stop being maintained, leaving the user charged for a service that no longer functions.

Frequently asked questions
Is it possible for an app promoted on Discord to be legitimate?
Yes — many genuine developers promote their apps in relevant Discord communities. The distinction is that legitimate apps clearly describe their subscription terms before asking for payment and offer genuine free functionality. If a subscription is the very first thing you see after installing, treat it with caution.
