Fake Apple Gift Card Balance-Draining Scam
Scammers instruct victims to purchase Apple Gift Cards and share the redemption codes under various pretexts, then immediately drain the balance by redeeming the codes on their own Apple IDs.

Apple Gift Cards are a legitimate product sold in Apple Stores, supermarkets, and online retailers. Their digital nature — the value is contained in a 16-digit code — makes them a preferred payment vehicle for fraud. Once a code is shared, the balance can be redeemed anywhere in the world within seconds, and the transaction is practically irreversible.
Scammers use Apple Gift Cards as an off-the-books payment rail across a wide range of fraud types: tech support scams that demand payment for a 'service', government impersonation that claims an outstanding debt, romance scams that request help with an emergency, and fake prize notifications that require a 'processing fee'. The Apple brand adds perceived legitimacy to the payment demand.
Apple has published warnings about this pattern and trained retail staff to flag suspicious gift card purchases, but the volume of fraud remains significant.
How this scam works on the Apple brand
The fraud begins with a scenario that creates a financial obligation: a fake IRS or HMRC debt, a virus removal fee from a tech support scammer, a prize-processing charge, or an urgent request from a 'stranded' romantic interest. The scammer directs the victim to a supermarket, pharmacy, or Apple Store to purchase Apple Gift Cards, and instructs them to call back or message the redemption codes.
Real government agencies, debt collectors, utility companies, and Apple itself never request payment by gift card for any reason. Apple's own support agents are trained to ask customers who say they are buying Apple Gift Cards for a 'support' payment to pause and verify the request — it is always a scam.
Once the victim calls back with the 16-digit code and PIN, the scammer redeems it on an Apple ID almost instantly. The victim is then told the 'payment did not process' and instructed to buy more cards. This cycle can continue until the victim runs out of money or realises something is wrong.
Common red flags
- Anyone requesting payment via Apple Gift Card — government agencies, tech support, banks, and utilities never accept gift cards as payment
- Instruction to buy cards and call back with the code rather than use a normal payment method
- A caller or online contact tells you to scratch off the protective coating and read the PIN over the phone
- You are told to keep the purchase secret from friends or family
- The scenario involves urgency — an arrest warrant, a virus, a romantic emergency — that discourages pausing to verify
- Apple retail staff ask if you are buying the card for someone who told you to
How to protect yourself
- Understand that no legitimate organisation accepts Apple Gift Cards as a form of payment for services, taxes, or fines
- If you are instructed to pay by gift card, hang up or stop the conversation immediately and contact the supposed organisation directly using a number you find independently
- Tell friends and family about this scam, especially those who may be less familiar with digital payment methods
- If you have already purchased cards, do not share the codes — contact Apple Support at apple.com/support immediately
- Report the fraud to Apple by calling or visiting an Apple Store with the physical cards

Frequently asked questions
Does Apple ever ask for payment by Apple Gift Card?
No. Apple Gift Cards are for purchasing apps, content, accessories, and Apple subscriptions within the Apple ecosystem. Apple and its support staff will never ask you to buy an Apple Gift Card to pay for support services, security fixes, or account reinstatement.
Can Apple reverse an Apple Gift Card redemption?
Once a code is redeemed on an Apple ID, reversing the transaction is very difficult. However, if the code has not yet been redeemed, Apple may be able to place a hold on it if you report quickly. Contact Apple Support as soon as possible if you have purchased cards under suspicious circumstances.
Why do scammers specifically choose Apple Gift Cards?
Apple Gift Cards are widely available in retail stores, come in high denominations, and can be redeemed globally within seconds on any Apple ID. This makes them an efficient and largely untraceable payment method for fraudsters. The Apple brand also lends a false sense of security to the payment demand.
