Fake Revolut Gift Card Balance Draining Scam
Scammers impersonate Revolut and instruct users to purchase gift cards to 'protect' their account balance from a supposed breach, then drain the card values once codes are shared.

Revolut's in-app security features — including virtual card numbers, disposable cards, and instant card freezing — are genuine safeguards that Revolut actively promotes to its users. Scammers co-opt this security-conscious brand image to make a gift-card demand sound more plausible: 'We need to move your funds to a temporary gift-card reserve while we investigate suspicious activity on your virtual card.'
The framing works because Revolut users are already comfortable with the idea of their money sitting in digital containers. A 'gift-card reserve' sounds, to the unfamiliar ear, like an extension of the virtual card concept. In reality, gift cards have no connection to Revolut's systems.
As with all gift-card scams, the funds become unrecoverable the moment the codes are read out, as scammers redeem them immediately on international resale platforms.
How this scam works on the Revolut brand
A call or in-app-style notification (sent via SMS to mimic Revolut's real notification format) states that the victim's Revolut virtual card was compromised in a data breach and multiple unauthorised charges are pending. The 'Revolut security team' advises that the fastest way to protect the account balance is to top up a gift card and share the code, which Revolut will hold as an off-platform reserve until the investigation is complete.
The social-media variant uses a fake Revolut customer-service profile on Twitter/X, Instagram, or Telegram. The profile responds to the user's own public tweet or post about a Revolut issue and moves the conversation to DM, where the gift-card request is made in the context of a legitimate-seeming support conversation.
In all cases, the real Revolut account shows no security alert, and the user's balance is untouched — until they transfer it to the scammer via gift cards.
Common red flags
- Revolut never asks users to purchase gift cards for any reason.
- The request arrives via SMS, phone, or social media DM rather than through the Revolut app.
- The caller asks you to purchase cards at a specific retailer and read the codes back immediately.
- Your Revolut app shows no security alert or suspicious activity notice.
- The social media profile responding to your post has low follower counts or a recent creation date.
- The 'Revolut support' number is not listed on revolut.com.
- Urgency: funds will be lost within hours unless you act.
How to protect yourself
- Know that Revolut will never ask you to purchase gift cards under any circumstances.
- For security concerns, use the in-app card freeze feature (it is instant and free) rather than acting on a phone call.
- Access Revolut support only through the in-app chat.
- Be sceptical of social media accounts claiming to offer Revolut support — Revolut's verified accounts are clearly marked.
- Warn friends and family who use Revolut about this specific tactic.
How to report it
- Report to Revolut through the in-app chat.
- Report phishing to [email protected].
- Contact the gift card issuer immediately if codes were shared — some balances can be frozen.
- Report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk.
- File with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Does Revolut have a gift-card reserve feature?
No. This concept does not exist. Revolut's security features are entirely within the app — card freezing, virtual card replacement, and transaction limits. Gift cards play no part in any legitimate Revolut security process.
Can Revolut's in-app support chat be impersonated?
Within the genuine Revolut app, the support chat is authenticated and secure. The risk is when scammers impersonate Revolut on external platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, or social media. Always use the in-app channel.
What is the fastest way to genuinely secure my Revolut account?
Open the Revolut app, go to the card you are concerned about, and tap Freeze. You can also go to Security and review recent login activity. Do not wait for a phone call to take these steps.
