Fake Netflix Gift Card Payment Demand Scam
Scammers send phishing calls or emails impersonating Netflix billing support, claiming an account balance must be paid via Netflix Gift Cards or other gift cards — Netflix does not accept gift cards for billing resolution.

Netflix does sell gift cards that can be redeemed as account credit at netflix.com/redeem. Unlike some other streaming services, Netflix gift cards are relatively common in retail stores, which adds a surface layer of plausibility to the scam.
However, Netflix never contacts subscribers and directs them to purchase gift cards to resolve a failed payment, account suspension, or outstanding balance. All genuine billing management happens through account settings at netflix.com.
Older subscribers and those in households where one person manages the account on behalf of others are particularly targeted, as they may be less familiar with how Netflix's billing system actually works.
How this scam works on the Netflix brand
A subscriber receives a robocall claiming to be from Netflix Account Billing. The automated message states that the account has an overdue balance and will be permanently closed unless payment is made today. The caller prompts the subscriber to press 1 to speak with a representative.
The representative explains that due to 'payment processing restrictions,' the only available method is a Netflix Gift Card purchased at any major retailer. After the subscriber purchases the card and reads out the code, the funds are immediately drained.
An email variant presents a fake billing notice with a precise overdue amount and a link to a 'Netflix Secure Payment Portal' where gift card codes can be entered — the codes are captured by the fraudulent site.
Common red flags
- Netflix never requests gift card codes to resolve an account balance or prevent suspension.
- Netflix billing calls are not initiated by Netflix — it is a streaming service, not a phone-first billing operation.
- Pressing 1 on a robocall to speak with a 'Netflix representative' always connects to a scam call centre.
- The 'Netflix Secure Payment Portal' URL is not netflix.com.
- The amount owed does not match any Netflix subscription tier's pricing.
- The caller says gift cards are the only accepted payment method due to account restrictions — this is always false.
How to protect yourself
- Manage Netflix billing only at netflix.com/account — never via a phone number from a robocall or a link in an email.
- Hang up immediately on any robocall claiming to be from Netflix.
- Netflix does not accept gift cards to settle billing disputes — do not purchase them for this reason.
- If you shared a gift card code, report the fraud to the retailer, to the gift card brand's fraud line, and to the FTC.
- Report the phishing email or call to Netflix at [email protected].
How to report it
- Forward phishing emails to [email protected].
- Report the robocall number to the FTC at donotcall.gov and ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- UK users: report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk and forward SMS to 7726.
- File a report with the IC3 at ic3.gov if money was lost.
Frequently asked questions
Does Netflix accept gift cards as payment for overdue balances?
Netflix gift cards can only be used to add credit to an account at netflix.com/redeem. They are never used to pay overdue balances, prevent suspension, or resolve billing issues over the phone.
Can Netflix call me to warn about an overdue balance?
Netflix does not proactively call subscribers about billing issues. If your payment fails, Netflix sends an automated email and in-app notification directing you to update your payment method in your account settings.
I purchased a Netflix gift card and read the code to a scammer — can I recover the funds?
Contact the retailer where the card was purchased and Netflix's support team at help.netflix.com immediately. Provide proof of purchase. Recovery is difficult once codes are redeemed, but filing reports with the FTC and local police creates a record that may assist any investigation.
