Fake Kraken Crypto Recovery Service Scams
Criminals impersonating Kraken's customer support offer to recover lost or frozen cryptocurrency assets, then charge advance fees and request wallet access — stealing more from people who have already been defrauded.

People who have lost cryptocurrency to exchange issues, forgotten passwords, or prior scams are uniquely vulnerable to 'recovery scams.' Fraudsters monitor social media for public complaints tagged with Kraken's handle and swoop in offering a specialized recovery team that can 'unlock frozen Kraken accounts' or 'retrieve funds lost in failed transactions.'
The impersonation is convincing: scammers use account names such as '@KrakenRecovery' or '@KrakenSupportOfficial,' respond to genuine distress with empathy, and claim to be senior Kraken compliance officers or blockchain forensics specialists working with Kraken on a contract basis. They are quick to provide fake case numbers and reference real-sounding Kraken policies to build trust.
Kraken does not have a separate recovery service or third-party contractors who contact users proactively on social media. Legitimate Kraken support operates exclusively through support.kraken.com and will never ask for your account password, seed phrase, or an upfront payment.
How this scam works on the Kraken brand
After initial contact — often via a Twitter/X reply or a direct message — the fake recovery agent walks the victim through a 'case intake' process. This involves submitting a form on a cloned Kraken portal, providing their account email, previous transaction IDs, and sometimes a government ID 'for verification.' The form also asks for the recovery seed phrase if the victim has a self-custody wallet.
Once identity and account details are collected, the agent announces that a 'recovery fee' of several hundred dollars — paid in cryptocurrency to avoid reversibility — is required to unlock the blockchain transaction or initiate the Kraken compliance review. After payment, the agent either disappears or requests additional fees for 'legal clearance' or 'tax compliance' before funds can be released.
Real Kraken account issues are resolved through support tickets at support.kraken.com, verified account ownership steps, and two-factor authentication resets — none of which require a fee or a seed phrase.
Common red flags
- Contact was initiated proactively by someone claiming to be Kraken — real Kraken support does not cold-contact users on social media
- Agent claims to operate a 'Kraken Recovery Division' or 'Kraken Blockchain Forensics team' — no such service exists
- Recovery process requires payment of a fee in crypto before any funds are returned
- You are asked to provide your wallet seed phrase or Kraken account password as part of the recovery
- Agent directs you to a site other than support.kraken.com or kraken.com to file your case
- Case reference numbers and 'official emails' all originate from non-kraken.com domains
How to protect yourself

- Never pay any upfront fee to recover cryptocurrency; legitimate exchange support processes do not charge recovery fees
- Do not share your seed phrase, private key, or account password with anyone regardless of claimed affiliation
- Enable two-factor authentication on your Kraken account and use the account master key feature where available
- If someone contacts you proactively claiming to be Kraken, verify by opening a new support ticket yourself at support.kraken.com

Frequently asked questions
Does Kraken offer a paid cryptocurrency recovery service?
No. Kraken does not charge fees to recover account access or resolve transaction issues. All legitimate Kraken support is provided free of charge through support.kraken.com. Any 'Kraken recovery service' that charges a fee is fraudulent.
Can anyone actually recover cryptocurrency that was stolen or lost?
Genuine blockchain forensics firms exist, but they work with law enforcement on large-scale cases and do not cold-contact individuals on social media. There is no service that can reverse a confirmed blockchain transaction — the technology does not allow it.
I already paid a recovery fee — should I pay again to unlock my funds?
Stop all payments immediately. Each additional fee request is a further theft. There are no funds to unlock — this is a scam. Report the matter to your local police and to IC3.gov or Action Fraud.
