Instagram has expanded its creator monetisation tools significantly — including Subscriptions, Gifts in Lives, Badges, and Reels bonuses. Creators are aware that these programmes exist and that eligibility can change over time, making them receptive to notifications about new earning opportunities.
Scammers pose as Instagram's Creator Partnerships team, informing creators that they have been selected for a new exclusive monetisation tier. The message references the creator's real follower count and recent engagement metrics — data assembled from the public profile — to lend credibility.
The fake portal collects Instagram credentials to 'activate the programme' and, in some variants, a nominal 'account verification fee'. Neither delivers any monetisation benefit; both result in account takeover or financial loss.
How this scam works on the Instagram brand
Instagram's genuine monetisation tools are accessible directly within the Instagram app at Professional Dashboard > Monetisation Tools. Instagram notifies eligible creators through in-app notifications and emails from @instagram.com or @mail.instagram.com addresses.
The scam notification arrives via DM from an impersonator account or via email. It references a real programme name — often something close to Instagram's real offerings but with a slight variation, such as 'Instagram Creator Plus' or 'Instagram Bonus Tier 2'. It explains that the creator must verify their account through a specific portal before the programme goes live.
The portal captures the creator's Instagram password and sometimes requests a small fee via a payment processor that is not affiliated with Meta or Instagram. After submission, the attacker changes the account password and recovery details, completing the takeover.
Common red flags
- An unsolicited DM or email tells you about a new Instagram monetisation programme you need to activate via an external link.
- The portal URL is not instagram.com or the Accounts Centre.
- You are asked to pay a fee to activate your monetisation eligibility — Instagram does not charge activation fees.
- The notification references a programme name that does not match Instagram's current announced tools.
- The sender is not a verified Instagram account — check for the blue tick.
- Urgency: 'You must activate within 48 hours or your spot will be given to another creator.'

Frequently asked questions
How does Instagram notify creators about genuine monetisation opportunities?
Instagram notifies eligible creators through in-app notifications in Professional Dashboard and through emails from @instagram.com. You can check your current monetisation eligibility and tools directly within the Professional Dashboard in the app.
Does Instagram ever charge a fee to join its creator monetisation programmes?
No. Instagram's creator tools such as Subscriptions, Gifts, and Badges are available to eligible creators at no activation cost. Any message demanding a fee to access monetisation is fraudulent.
I paid the activation fee. What should I do?
Contact your bank or payment provider to dispute the transaction. Also change your Instagram password immediately and check that your account recovery email and phone have not been changed.
