Fake Instagram Follower Growth App Subscription Trap Scam
Rogue apps in mobile app stores claim to boost Instagram followers and engagement, but instead enroll users in costly recurring subscriptions while harvesting Instagram credentials through a fake 'Sign in with Instagram' flow.

Instagram's official app is free on the App Store and Google Play, published by Instagram, LLC. While Instagram does offer paid advertising through its own Ads Manager, there is no legitimate Instagram-endorsed service that sells followers or guarantees engagement growth for a monthly fee.
Criminals create apps with names like 'InstaGrow,' 'Followers for Instagram Pro,' or 'IG Booster' that promise rapid follower growth. These apps exploit two vulnerabilities simultaneously: first, by enrolling users in recurring subscription charges, and second, by requiring a fake 'Instagram login' that captures credentials for account takeover.
Content creators and small businesses eager to grow their Instagram presence are the primary targets.
How this scam works on the Instagram brand
A creator downloads an app from the App Store that promises 1,000 genuine followers per month for a small weekly fee. During setup, the app presents a 'Sign in with Instagram' button. This does not use Instagram's official OAuth — instead it opens a webview that displays a fake Instagram login form where credentials are entered and captured by the developer.
The creator's account may then be used to follow others in bulk (risking Instagram suspension) or to send automated DMs. Meanwhile, the subscription charges the creator weekly or monthly without delivering any real follower growth.
Some apps start by delivering low-quality bot followers that temporarily inflate the count, then gradually disappear as Instagram purges them — giving the app an initial illusion of legitimacy before the numbers drop.
Common red flags
- No app can legitimately guarantee real follower growth — only Instagram's own paid ads can promote accounts.
- Instagram does not provide a public OAuth API for third-party apps to access account credentials — a 'Sign in with Instagram' button in a third-party follower app is always a fake login form.
- The app requests your Instagram username and password directly rather than using Face ID or a system-level prompt.
- The developer name in the app store is not Instagram, LLC.
- Reviews are overwhelmingly five stars with identical wording posted on the same day.
- The subscription charges continue even after uninstalling the app — you must cancel in your device's subscription settings.
How to protect yourself
- Never enter your Instagram username and password into any third-party app — your credentials should only go into the official Instagram app or instagram.com.
- If you entered credentials in a third-party app, change your Instagram password immediately via the official app.
- Review your app store subscriptions and cancel any you do not recognise.
- Report the app to the App Store or Google Play using the 'Report a Problem' or 'Flag as inappropriate' option.
- Use Instagram's own Boosting or Ads tools for genuine promotion — these are the only channel Instagram endorses.
How to report it
- Report the fake app in the Apple App Store: scroll to the bottom of the listing and tap 'Report a Problem.'
- Report the app to Google Play via the three-dot menu > Flag as inappropriate.
- Report account compromise to Instagram via instagram.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
- Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Can any third-party app legitimately grow my Instagram followers?
Instagram's policies prohibit the use of third-party services that promise followers or engagement. Apps that claim to do so violate Instagram's terms of service and risk your account being suspended.
Will my followers disappear if I used a follower-growth app?
Instagram regularly removes bot accounts and fake followers. If you used a service that provided bot followers, you may see your count drop as Instagram purges them.
How do I grow my Instagram following legitimately?
Use Instagram's official paid promotion tools (Boost Post), create high-quality Reels, engage consistently with your niche community, and use relevant hashtags. These approaches comply with Instagram's terms and build an engaged audience.
