Netflix does acquire independent content — short films, documentaries, and scripted series from independent producers have appeared on the platform. This genuine pathway creates credibility for a scam that targets aspiring creators with an offer that seems like their big break.
The fraudulent outreach typically arrives via email or LinkedIn, claiming that a Netflix acquisitions executive has reviewed the creator's portfolio or social media content and wants to discuss a licensing arrangement. The message uses Netflix's visual identity, references real Netflix programmes, and provides a plausible-sounding contact name.
The creator is directed to a 'Netflix Creator Portal' to register their project, at which point they are asked to pay a 'content registration fee' or to log in with their Netflix account credentials to 'link their creator profile'. Neither request is legitimate, and both result in financial or credential loss.
How this scam works on the Netflix brand
Netflix's real content acquisition process is conducted through established industry channels — production companies, agents, and formal pitching processes at dedicated industry events. Netflix does not cold-email independent creators on social media asking them to pay registration fees to have their content considered.
The fraudulent portal mimics Netflix's design language meticulously. The registration form asks for the creator's Netflix account email and password to 'verify account ownership', and a 'non-refundable content registration fee' ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars, payable via bank transfer or cryptocurrency.
After submission, the creator receives a fabricated contract or agreement to sustain the illusion briefly, then communications go quiet. The stolen Netflix credentials may also be used to charge the creator's linked payment card for subscription upgrades.
