Fake Netflix Account Sharing Clone Scam
Scammers exploit Netflix's genuine account-sharing restrictions by cloning friends' or family members' Netflix-linked social profiles to send fake 'invite to household' messages that lead to credential phishing pages.

Netflix's 'Paid Sharing' policy limits account access to users in the same household. Netflix allows account holders to invite additional members — at an extra monthly fee — by sending them an email from within the Netflix account settings. This legitimate feature creates a plausible template for scammers.
Criminals impersonate someone the victim knows — often by cloning their social media profile — and send a fake Netflix household invite link claiming the victim can join the household for free. The link leads to a phishing page mimicking the Netflix sign-in flow.
The scam is effective because the premise is timely and consistent with Netflix's actual policy changes, and because receiving an invite from a known person reduces suspicion.
How this scam works on the Netflix brand
A Netflix user receives an email or WhatsApp message from someone who appears to be a family member: 'Hey, I've added you to my Netflix household — click this link to set up your access.' The link goes to a page styled as Netflix's household invite acceptance flow, asking the victim to sign in with their Netflix account.
After signing in, the victim may be told the invite is being processed and to wait 24 hours. Meanwhile, their credentials are captured. The real family member sent no such invite — their profile was cloned or a spoofed contact was used.
Some variants request the victim to create a new Netflix account via the phishing page, capturing card details during the fake account registration.
Common red flags
- Verify any Netflix household invite directly with the sender through a separate channel (phone call or text) before clicking the link.
- The invite link should arrive from @netflix.com — any other sender address is suspicious.
- Genuine Netflix household invites are accepted at netflix.com — check the URL in the browser before entering credentials.
- An invite offering free access to someone outside the account holder's home is inconsistent with Netflix's actual paid sharing model.
- The page asks you to enter card details to 'activate' your household profile — the real Netflix household invite does not require a new card entry from the invitee.
- The sender profile on social media or WhatsApp looks newly created or has an unusually low friend or follower count.
How to protect yourself
- Confirm any Netflix household invite directly with the supposed sender before clicking any link.
- Access Netflix household settings only at netflix.com/account — do not follow email links to accept invites without verifying the URL.
- Enable a profile PIN on your Netflix account (Account > Security > Profile Lock) to limit the damage of any credential compromise.
- If you entered credentials on a fake Netflix page, change your Netflix password immediately and check linked payment methods.
- Report the phishing attempt to Netflix at [email protected].
How to report it
- Forward the phishing email to [email protected].
- Report the cloned social profile to the relevant social media platform.
- Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- UK users: report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk.
Frequently asked questions
How does a real Netflix household invite work?
The account holder goes to netflix.com/account > Household, selects 'Add a member,' and Netflix sends an invitation email to the invitee from @netflix.com. The invitee is linked to the account — no new card entry is required on the invitee's end.
What does Netflix's Paid Sharing policy actually allow?
Netflix's Paid Sharing policy allows account holders to add one extra member outside their household for an additional monthly fee that is charged to the account holder. The feature is managed within the Netflix account settings, not through external links.
My Netflix account was compromised — what are the first steps?
Go to netflix.com/account > Security > Sign out of all devices. Then change your password and review the 'Recent device streaming activity' for unrecognised devices. Contact Netflix support if you cannot regain access.
