Ledger Live, the companion application for Ledger hardware wallets, includes a 'Discover' section where users can access partner-integrated DeFi and staking features. Scammers exploit this legitimate feature by creating fake 'Ledger Live Earn' portals that mimic the Ledger Live interface and promise substantially higher yields than legitimate staking protocols offer.
The scam is particularly insidious for hardware wallet users because they have often gone out of their way to prioritize security. The assumption that a 'Ledger-branded' portal carries the same security guarantees as the physical device leads victims to lower their guard. The fake portals use Ledger's signature black-and-white branding and reference real Ledger partner protocols to appear credible.
Ledger Live's Earn and Discover features are only accessible within the genuine Ledger Live application, downloadable exclusively at ledger.com/ledger-live. Any staking portal accessed via a browser link claiming to be a Ledger product requires independent verification against Ledger's official partner list.
How this scam works on the Ledger brand
Victims encounter the fake portal through sponsored search results for 'Ledger Live staking' or through phishing emails warning that their 'Ledger Live Earn account requires reactivation.' The cloned site presents a staking dashboard with pre-filled asset balances, creating the impression that it already reads their wallet data.
Users are prompted to connect a software wallet (often MetaMask or WalletConnect) to 'sync' with their Ledger hardware device. This breaks the fundamental security model of hardware wallets — the Ledger device is designed precisely so that private keys never leave the hardware. Connecting a software wallet as an intermediary to a third-party site bypasses the Ledger entirely.
Once the software wallet is connected, the staking deposit transaction is submitted to an attacker contract. The dashboard shows a growing balance to encourage additional deposits. Withdrawal requests are declined with demands for 'validator bond fees' or 'network unlock costs.'
Common red flags
- Portal URL is not ledger.com — fake domains include ledger-live-earn.com, ledgerlive-staking.io, and similar
- Browser-based portal claims to be Ledger Live staking — the real product is a desktop/mobile application, not a website
- Prompted to connect MetaMask or WalletConnect to a page claiming to be a Ledger product
- APY offered is much higher than rates shown within the genuine Ledger Live application
- Withdrawals require paying an additional fee before principal can be released
- Access required via link from email or social media rather than from within the Ledger Live application itself
How to protect yourself
- Access all Ledger Live features only from the genuine Ledger Live desktop or mobile application, downloaded from ledger.com/ledger-live
- Never connect MetaMask or another software wallet to a website claiming to provide Ledger Live staking — this bypasses your hardware wallet's security
- Verify staking partners by checking ledger.com's official partner page before approving any transaction
- Confirm every transaction on the Ledger device's physical screen — the hardware wallet will show the exact contract and amount
- Use Ledger's genuine hardware confirmation as the final authority; if the physical device shows an unfamiliar contract address, reject the transaction
How to report it
- Report the fake site to Ledger at [email protected]
- Submit the URL to Google Safe Browsing and Netcraft's phishing reporting tool
- File a report with your national cybercrime authority
- If funds were lost on-chain, provide transaction hashes when reporting to law enforcement
Frequently asked questions
Is Ledger Live Earn a website or an application?
Ledger Live is a desktop and mobile application. Its staking and Earn features are accessed from within the app. There is no legitimate browser-based 'Ledger Live Earn' website that requires connecting an external wallet.
What staking APY does Ledger Live legitimately offer?
Ledger Live's staking rates depend on the asset and the underlying protocol (such as Lido for ETH). These rates are shown transparently within the app and are consistent with network rates — generally low single digits for ETH and varying for other assets.
