MetaMask users encountering errors — 'pending transaction stuck,' 'wallet not syncing,' 'wrong network' — frequently search online for help. Scammers exploit this pattern by ranking fake 'MetaMask Support Chat' pages in search results or running ads that lead to sites with convincing automated chat interfaces.
These chatbots are designed to mimic a professional technical support flow. They ask diagnostic questions about the problem the user is experiencing, display empathetic responses, and eventually 'escalate' the issue to a point where they claim a wallet re-authentication is required — which involves entering the Secret Recovery Phrase to 're-sync' the wallet with MetaMask's servers.
MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet. It has no servers that store user wallet data. There is nothing to 're-sync.' The Secret Recovery Phrase, if entered anywhere other than the MetaMask extension itself on a trusted device, gives the recipient complete and permanent access to all wallet funds.
How this scam works on the MetaMask brand
The chatbot opens on a site with a URL such as metamask-support-chat.com and uses MetaMask's purple-and-fox design. The initial greeting asks the user to describe their issue. After the user explains the problem, the bot runs through a series of diagnostic questions — network, transaction ID, browser version — that sound credible and technical.
Eventually, the bot announces that the issue requires a 'wallet integrity verification' and that the user must enter their 12 or 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase in the chat window to complete it. To appear secure, the input field may show asterisks or claim the phrase is 'encrypted before transmission.' In reality, the phrase is transmitted in plain text to the attacker.
Some fake chatbots escalate to a 'live agent' — actually the attacker directly — who continues the social engineering if the automated flow fails. Real MetaMask support is provided through support.metamask.io using a ticket system, not a live chat on an external site.

- Input field for the phrase claims it is 'encrypted' but is on an untrusted site

Frequently asked questions
Does MetaMask offer live chat support?
MetaMask provides support through a ticket-based system at support.metamask.io and through its community forums. There is no official live chat for MetaMask support. Any live chat claiming to be MetaMask on an external site is a scam.
Why do fake MetaMask support pages rank highly in search results?
Scammers use paid search advertisements and SEO techniques to appear at the top of search results for queries like 'MetaMask wallet help' or 'MetaMask stuck transaction fix.' Always navigate directly to support.metamask.io rather than relying on search result rankings.
