Fake Coinbase Token Airdrop Claim Sites
Fraudulent websites cloning Coinbase's brand promise early access to a new 'Coinbase token' airdrop, tricking users into connecting wallets and granting malicious approval transactions.

Coinbase's history of launching products — including its Base Layer 2 blockchain and various promotional campaigns — gives fraudsters ready-made narratives for fake airdrop events. Scam sites circulate on Twitter/X, Reddit, and Discord, announcing a time-limited 'COIN token airdrop' or 'Base network genesis airdrop' exclusively for Coinbase account holders.
The sites use Coinbase's exact branding, blue color scheme, and even embed what appears to be a Coinbase account verification widget. Users are prompted to connect their external wallet to verify their Coinbase account status and 'claim' a token allocation proportional to their transaction history. The connection prompt then serves a malicious token approval or signature request.
Coinbase has not issued a general-circulation COIN token, and promotional rewards are always distributed within the verified Coinbase app — not via an external wallet-connection page. Any site asking you to link a self-custody wallet to claim a Coinbase reward is not affiliated with Coinbase.
How this scam works on the Coinbase brand
The scam site URL typically uses a variation on coinbase.com — such as coinbase-base-airdrop.io or claim.coinbase-token.com — and loads a near-identical copy of the Coinbase homepage. A banner announces 'The COIN Token Public Airdrop — Claim Your Allocation Before [date].' A live counter showing tokens claimed creates urgency.
When a user clicks 'Check Eligibility,' they are shown a simulated eligibility score based on their stated Coinbase account age or trading volume, reinforcing the fiction that this is a real Coinbase product. The 'Claim' button then presents a standard wallet-connection modal. After connecting, the site requests either an ERC-20 unlimited approval or prompts the user to sign an EIP-712 message that, once signed, drains supported tokens.
Coinbase's legitimate Base network did conduct promotional campaigns that were administered through verified partners and clearly announced at coinbase.com and base.org — not through unsolicited social media posts.
Common red flags
- Site URL is not coinbase.com or base.org — it uses a lookalike domain incorporating the Coinbase or COIN name
- Requires connecting a self-custody wallet (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet browser extension) to 'verify Coinbase account status'
- Promotes a 'COIN token' or other unnamed Coinbase-branded token that is not listed on the official coinbase.com blog or newsroom
- Eligibility check asks for your email or Coinbase account number outside the actual Coinbase platform
- Artificial urgency — countdown timers, limited supply, or 'last chance' messaging
- Found via sponsored social post, Discord DM, or Telegram group rather than coinbase.com announcements
How to protect yourself
- Check coinbase.com's official newsroom and blog to verify whether any airdrop announcement is real before interacting
- Never connect a self-custody wallet to any page that claims to be Coinbase but is not coinbase.com
- Bookmark the real coinbase.com and navigate from that bookmark rather than clicking links from social media
- Review token approvals regularly using revoke.cash and revoke any unexpected permissions
- Enable Coinbase's in-app notifications so you receive legitimate announcements directly rather than learning about them second-hand via social media
How to report it
- Report the phishing site to Coinbase at [email protected]
- Submit the URL to Google Safe Browsing at safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish
- Report fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk (UK)
- If assets were stolen, file a detailed report with IC3.gov including all transaction hashes and site URLs
Frequently asked questions
Has Coinbase issued its own COIN token?
As of the time of this writing, Coinbase has not issued a general-circulation COIN token airdrop for retail users. Any claim to the contrary should be verified only through coinbase.com's official blog or newsroom.
What is the Base network and does it have a legitimate airdrop?
Base is a legitimate Layer 2 blockchain built by Coinbase and launched in 2023. Any Base-related promotional events are announced at base.org and coinbase.com, not through unsolicited messages or third-party sites.
I signed an EIP-712 message on one of these sites — what should I do?
Check your wallet's transaction and signature history immediately. Visit revoke.cash to review and revoke token approvals. Move assets to a new wallet address if you suspect a signature granted sweeping permissions.
