Telegram local community groups are frequently used to find tradespeople and service providers, including removal companies. This informal marketplace creates an opportunity for scam movers to present themselves as local, reliable operators and collect deposits before moving day with no intention of turning up.
Movers in time-critical situations — end of tenancy deadlines, job relocation constraints — are particularly exposed because they have less time for thorough due diligence and may accept the first seemingly credible quote.
How this scam works on Telegram
A user in a local Telegram group posts offering removal services at competitive rates. Enquiries receive a prompt, professional-seeming response with a price list. A deposit is requested by bank transfer to confirm the booking date.
On moving day, the company reports a vehicle breakdown or driver illness and offers to rebook — but the rebooked date also does not materialise. The deposited amount is never refunded. In some cases, the operator shows up but with an undersized vehicle or insufficient crew, then demands additional payment to complete the job.
Some operators target expat Telegram groups specifically, knowing that international residents may be less familiar with local consumer rights and less likely to pursue formal complaints.
Common red flags
- Removal service advertised only via Telegram with no verifiable external business listing
- Deposit required by bank transfer before any written contract is provided
- Company cannot be found in any national removal trade body directory
- Quote provided without any survey of items or confirmation of access requirements
- Operator becomes evasive when asked about insurance cover for goods in transit
- Phone number provided disconnects or changes after payment is made
How to protect yourself
- Verify the company is registered with a national removal trade association before booking
- Get a written fixed-price quote after a proper survey and keep the deposit minimal
- Confirm the booking by phone the day before the move using a number sourced independently
- Photograph all items before loading and keep a signed inventory
- Have a backup removal contact identified before moving day in case the booking fails
- Check consumer complaint sites for the company name before committing
How to report it
- Report the Telegram user to the group administrator and via the in-app 'Report' function
- File a complaint with your national trading standards or consumer protection authority
- Contact police if belongings are withheld as part of a hostage-payment demand
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum I should check before booking a removal company found on Telegram?
Verify trade association membership, obtain a written fixed-price contract, confirm goods-in-transit insurance, and pay the minimum deposit possible. Anything less gives you very limited recourse if the booking fails.
