Telegram's electronics trading channels and regional buy-sell groups are used by millions for secondhand and grey-market phone purchases. The absence of buyer protection and the ease of operating anonymous channels makes Telegram attractive to phone upgrade scammers who list genuine-looking product photos and exit after payment.
The informal nature of Telegram chat creates a sense of peer-to-peer trust that scammers exploit. Buyers who would exercise more caution on a formal marketplace may act more quickly in a conversational Telegram context.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel posts listings for new flagship phones with model photos, colour options, and specifications. Prices are 20–40% below retail. When a buyer expresses interest, they are directed to DM the seller.
Payment is requested via crypto or peer-to-peer apps before shipment. A shipping confirmation is sent with a tracking number. The tracking either shows delivery to a different address, never updates, or the received package contains a dummy item or a different, lower-value phone.
Some operators in targeted regions conduct genuine partial sales to build channel reputation before executing a large-scale fraud and closing the channel.

Frequently asked questions
Can I verify a phone before buying on Telegram?
Request a live video call where the seller shows the phone powered on, navigates to the IMEI screen (dial *#06#), and displays the settings showing it has not been reset. Verify the IMEI on a blacklist checker before transferring any payment.
