Online Marriage Visa Fee Scams on Dating Apps
How scammers on dating apps propose marriage quickly and then request payment for fabricated marriage visa, legal, or registration fees.
Part of: Online Marriage Visa Fee Scam
Last reviewed: 8 June 2026
Online marriage visa scams exploit the romantic milestone of a marriage proposal to introduce a sequence of fabricated administrative fees. A dating app contact — usually presenting as successful, attractive, and deeply committed — proposes marriage after a concentrated period of courtship and then explains that the international marriage or spousal visa process requires the victim to contribute to specific costs.
Because a genuine international marriage can involve legal and administrative steps, the framing feels credible. Victims are emotionally committed to the relationship and motivated to clear the apparent bureaucratic hurdles. The fees escalate and the marriage never occurs.
How this scam works on dating apps
After weeks of intensive online courtship, the scammer proposes marriage and begins discussing moving to the victim's country. They share documents purporting to be visa application forms, legal translation certificates, or government fee schedules — all fabricated. The victim is asked to pay their share of costs directly to the scammer rather than to any government office.
Each payment resolves one barrier while revealing another: a translation service, a medical clearance, a marriage certificate apostille, a legal notarisation. The scammer maintains emotional warmth and gratitude throughout, framing each payment as an investment in their shared future. Eventually they disappear or the payments stop producing any forward movement.
Common red flags
- Marriage proposal comes after a short online-only relationship with no in-person meeting
- Visa or marriage fees are payable to the scammer rather than through an official government channel
- Documents shared cannot be verified through official government or consulate websites
- Each resolved requirement is immediately replaced by a new one
- Scammer is always abroad and cannot meet before the process is complete
- Payment methods requested avoid buyer protection: wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
How to protect yourself
- Verify all immigration and marriage registration fees directly through official government and consulate websites
- Never pay visa or marriage fees to an individual — all genuine costs are paid to government bodies
- Insist on meeting in person before any legal or financial commitment
- Consult a licensed immigration attorney before acting on any claimed legal requirement
- Do not let a recent marriage proposal override careful financial judgement
How to report it
- Report the dating app profile using the in-app report function
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or Action Fraud (UK)
- Contact your bank if money was sent and request an urgent recall
Frequently asked questions
Do international marriages involve fees I need to pay to my partner?
No. All genuine visa and marriage registration fees are paid directly to government bodies or licensed legal representatives — never to the prospective partner personally.
