Visa sponsorship romance scams combine the emotional leverage of a romantic relationship with the apparent legitimacy of a bureaucratic process. A scammer builds a connection on a dating app and gradually develops a narrative around wanting to move to the victim's country to be with them. The apparent commitment of immigrating together deepens the emotional bond significantly.
When the time comes to begin the immigration process, fabricated fees emerge — visa application costs, sponsorship bond payments, interview preparation services, or agent fees. All payments go directly to the scammer, not to any government body.
How this scam works on dating apps
After weeks or months of online courtship, the scammer raises the idea of relocating to be with the victim permanently. They express hope and commitment, then explain that the visa process requires a financial bond, a sponsorship fee from the receiving party, or payment to an immigration agent — framing the victim as their only hope.
Documents purporting to be government forms or agency invoices may be shared. Payment is requested by wire transfer or gift card. After payment, a new requirement appears — a further fee, a medical clearance, a legal translation cost. The visa is perpetually 'nearly ready'.
Common red flags
- Romantic relationship on a dating app progresses quickly toward immigration planning
- Partner requests money for visa or sponsorship fees before you have met in person
- Claimed government fees cannot be verified on official immigration websites
- Documents provided look official but contain errors or cannot be authenticated
- Payment is requested by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift card — not directly to a government portal
- Each fee paid generates a new requirement before the visa is finalised
How to protect yourself
- Verify any immigration fees directly on official government immigration websites
- Never send money for visa costs to an individual — all genuine fees are paid directly to government portals
- Meet in person before any immigration discussions or financial commitments
- Consult a licensed immigration solicitor or attorney before acting on any advice from an online contact
- Be cautious of any relationship that moves quickly toward immigration planning
How to report it
- Report the dating app account using the in-app report function
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or Action Fraud (UK)
- Contact your bank if money was transferred and request an urgent recall
Frequently asked questions
Does a romantic partner ever legitimately need me to pay visa fees on their behalf?
Genuine immigration fees are paid by the applicant directly to government bodies through official portals. No legitimate immigration process requires a third party to transfer money to an individual rather than a government account.
