TikTok is extensively used to discover product deals, and phone upgrade offers perform well in engagement metrics because they target a universal need. Short-form videos can compress a compelling offer into seconds, and the TikTok comment section creates apparent social validation when bot accounts post positive reactions.
The platform's younger user base — many of whom are navigating phone contracts independently for the first time — may be less familiar with standard carrier procedures, making them more susceptible to offers that deviate from legitimate practice without raising immediate suspicion.
How this scam works on TikTok
A video claims a major carrier is running a limited-time upgrade promotion where users can trade in any phone for a new flagship device with no monthly increase. The video directs viewers to a link in the account's bio. The link leads to a fake carrier website that collects personal details, payment card information, and trade-in shipping instructions. The victim receives nothing and their personal data is used for further fraud.
Some TikTok accounts sell 'unlocked' phones at steep discounts, collecting payment before shipping a locked, broken, or entirely different device. The purchase is presented as a limited availability deal to prevent buyers from taking time to research.
Coupon code videos claim special discount codes for carrier store purchases that either do not work or direct users to counterfeit carrier websites.
Common red flags
- Deal is exclusively available through a TikTok bio link rather than through the carrier's official website or store
- Video uses urgency language such as 'only valid today' or 'while stocks last'
- Account posting the deal is newly created or focuses entirely on phone upgrade content
- Bio link leads to a site that looks like a carrier's but has a different domain
- Carrier upgrade offer asks for full payment card details or requires a trade-in shipment before any contract is confirmed
- Deal terms described in the video do not match anything on the carrier's verified website
How to protect yourself
- Access carrier upgrade promotions exclusively through the carrier's official website or physical store
- Never send a trade-in device before a replacement has been confirmed and dispatched through official channels
- Verify any TikTok-promoted deal by calling the carrier's official customer service number
- Do not enter payment card details on any site reached through a TikTok bio link without independent verification
- Check current offers on the carrier's official website — if a promoted deal is not there, it is not real
How to report it
- Tap the share icon on the video and report it to TikTok as a scam
- Report the account by visiting the profile and selecting 'Report'
- Contact your national consumer protection authority if payment was made for a device not received
Frequently asked questions
Do carriers ever run exclusive TikTok promotions?
Some carriers do partner with creators for sponsored content, but legitimate promotions always link back to the carrier's own verified website for redemption. A deal that can only be accessed through a third-party site or personal seller account is not an official carrier promotion.
