What is pig butchering?
Pig butchering is a long-running investment fraud where scammers build a trusting relationship before persuading victims to invest in a fake platform and draining their funds.

Explanation
The term describes a method where fraudsters 'fatten up' a victim over weeks or months — through friendly conversation, romance, or friendship — before guiding them to invest in a cryptocurrency or trading platform that appears legitimate but is entirely controlled by the scammers.
Early small withdrawals are permitted to build trust. Victims are encouraged to invest progressively more. When they try to withdraw a significant amount, they find it blocked by invented 'tax' or 'fee' requirements. Every additional payment goes to the scammers. The platform has no real funds — it is a front designed to show convincing-looking balance figures.
Pig-butchering operations are often run by organised criminal groups. Victims can lose very large sums of money before realising what has happened.
Common red flags
- A new online contact introduces you to an investment platform unprompted
- The platform is not listed on any major financial regulator's register
- Returns appear unusually high and consistent
- Small early withdrawals are permitted but larger ones are blocked
- New fees or taxes appear when you try to withdraw
- The relationship with the contact feels unusually close for how recently you met
- You are encouraged to keep the investment private
What to do now
- Stop depositing immediately
- Do not pay additional 'fees' or 'taxes' to release funds — they don't exist
- Report to your bank and national fraud service
- Preserve all communications, wallet addresses, and transaction records
- Seek support — the emotional manipulation involved can be significant
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover money lost to a pig-butchering scam?
Recovery is difficult. Report to your bank and fraud authorities immediately, preserve all records, and be very cautious of any unsolicited recovery service — these often target pig-butchering victims specifically.
Why do pig-butchering scammers invest so much time?
Because the returns are much higher. A victim who trusts the scammer is likely to invest far more and resist warnings from friends and family for longer.
