What is a pig butchering scam?
A pig butchering scam is a long-con fraud where criminals build a fake romantic or friendly relationship with a victim over weeks or months, then lure them into a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platform before draining all their money.

Explanation
The name comes from the practice of fattening a pig before slaughter. Scammers invest significant time cultivating trust, often through social media, dating apps, or a seemingly accidental wrong-number text. They present themselves as successful, charming professionals and gradually introduce the idea of a profitable investment opportunity.
Once trust is established, the victim is introduced to a fake crypto trading platform that appears to show real-time profits. Early small withdrawals are often permitted to build confidence. Victims are encouraged to invest more and recruit others. When they attempt a large withdrawal, they face fabricated "tax" or "fee" requirements and eventually lose everything.
Pig butchering operations are frequently run by organised crime networks, sometimes using trafficked workers in Southeast Asia who are forced to conduct the fraud. The victim loses money and also experiences profound emotional betrayal, since the relationship itself was a fabrication from the start.
Recovery is extremely rare because funds are moved quickly through cryptocurrency wallets across multiple jurisdictions. The best protection is being sceptical of anyone online who pivots a personal relationship toward investment advice.
Common red flags
- A stranger contacts you via wrong number, social media, or dating app and quickly becomes warm and attentive
- The new contact mentions unusually high crypto or forex investment returns
- They introduce a trading platform not listed on any regulated exchange
- Early small withdrawals succeed, then larger ones are blocked by 'fees' or 'taxes'
- You are asked to recruit friends or family to the same platform
- The relationship accelerates unnaturally fast with professions of affection or friendship
What to do now
- Stop all transfers immediately and do not pay any additional 'fees' — they will not unlock your funds
- Screenshot and preserve all chat logs, transaction records, and platform URLs
- Report to your national fraud authority and the platform where initial contact was made
- Report to the FBI IC3 (US), Action Fraud (UK), or your regional equivalent
- Contact your bank or payment provider about any fiat transfers made
- Reach out to a victim support organisation — the emotional trauma is real and help is available
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back from a pig butchering scam?
Recovery is very difficult because funds are moved rapidly through cryptocurrency. Fiat transfers from bank accounts have a better chance if reported quickly. Contact your bank immediately and file a police report — some jurisdictions have victim restitution funds.
Are the people I was talking to real?
Often the 'persona' is entirely fabricated — a mix of stolen photos and a scripted character. In some cases, the actual typist may themselves be a trafficking victim forced to run the scam, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
How long do these scams usually run before the victim loses money?
Campaigns typically run one to six months. Scammers are patient because larger investments yield larger payouts. The longest-running cases have continued for over a year before the final 'slaughter'.
