Empty Box Scams via Apple Pay
How fraudulent sellers use Apple Pay's trusted brand and one-tap convenience to collect payment for items delivered as empty boxes.

Apple Pay on a fake storefront creates an initial trust impression that the seller is a credible merchant. Combined with a one-tap checkout, Apple Pay removes the consideration time that might otherwise prompt a buyer to research the seller. By the time the empty box arrives, the payment has long since settled.
Disputes for Apple Pay purchases are handled through the linked card issuer. Consumers using a credit card linked to Apple Pay generally have stronger chargeback rights than those using a debit card or Apple Cash balance.
How this scam works on Apple Pay
A fake storefront for electronics or collectibles promotes Apple Pay as its featured checkout. The buyer authenticates quickly with Face ID and the order is confirmed. A package arrives with a valid tracking number but contains only bubble wrap or an unrelated lightweight item.
The buyer contacts support, receives no meaningful response, and files a dispute. The merchant may provide the tracking confirmation as evidence that the order was 'delivered,' requiring the buyer to escalate with additional evidence to win the dispute.
The storefront is typically closed or renamed within weeks to avoid a pattern of disputes.

Frequently asked questions
What evidence helps win an Apple Pay dispute for an empty box?
The most compelling evidence is an unboxing video showing the weight and condition of the sealed package before and during opening. Supplement this with the carrier's tracking weight record, photos of the contents (or lack thereof), and all purchase confirmation emails.
