Empty box scams use Cash App to collect instant, irreversible payments for high-value items that are never really sent. The buyer pays a personal $Cashtag for what they believe is a genuine gadget, but receives an empty box or worthless filler.
Cash App payments to individuals are treated like cash with no buyer protection, which is why scammers prefer them. A seller demanding Cash App for an expensive item from a stranger is a strong fraud signal.
How this scam works on Cash App
The buyer is offered a discounted phone, console, or laptop and told to pay via Cash App to a $Cashtag to secure it. Urgency and a low price drive the sale.
After payment, the seller ships an empty or weighted box, sometimes with valid-looking tracking. The buyer discovers the deception on opening the package.
The seller stops responding to refund requests. Because Cash App payments to personal accounts are generally irreversible, the funds are lost once the transfer clears.
