Empty box scams involve selling a high-value item — often a phone, console, or laptop — and shipping an empty box, a brick, or worthless filler instead. Sellers frequently demand payment via Zelle because it moves instantly between bank accounts with no buyer protection.
Zelle payments to the wrong person are generally not reversible, which is why scammers favor them. A seller insisting on Zelle for an expensive item from a stranger is a major warning sign.
How this scam works on Zelle
A buyer finds a great deal on electronics through a marketplace or social post and is told to pay via Zelle to a personal handle to complete the sale. The seller stresses speed and a 'first paid, first served' rule.
The payment lands instantly. The seller ships an empty box, a weighted object, or nothing, sometimes with tracking that shows 'delivered' to create confusion.
When the buyer opens an empty box and seeks a refund, the seller disappears. Because the Zelle payment went to a personal account, recovery is very difficult once it clears.

Frequently asked questions
The tracking says delivered, so why is the box empty?
Scammers ship an empty or weighted box so tracking shows 'delivered,' making disputes harder. With Zelle to a personal account, recovery is difficult once paid. Use buyer-protected payments or in-person inspection for high-value items.
