Fake brand outlet scams on TikTok exploit the platform's algorithm to reach consumers who follow or engage with content from genuine brands. By creating accounts that mimic official brand aesthetics — logos, colour palettes, product photography — scammers can appear as an authoritative sales channel to users who are already primed to buy.
The 'clearance sale' or 'outlet event' framing exploits consumers' awareness that brands do hold genuine sales, reducing the suspicion that would normally accompany dramatically reduced prices.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok account is created with a name and aesthetic closely matching a well-known brand, sometimes including the brand's logo and product imagery. Videos advertise a limited-time sale — often a supposed stockroom clearance, end-of-line event, or loyalty sale.
Viewers click the link in the bio, which leads to a convincingly designed website that may rank above the genuine brand's site in some search results. Payment is processed and the buyer receives nothing, a counterfeit, or a completely different item.
The account may run for days or weeks before TikTok's moderation removes it, during which time it processes many fraudulent orders.
Common red flags
- Account name includes the brand name but has a slight variation, addition, or misspelling
- Account was created recently and has only sale-related content
- Sale discount is unusually large for the brand in question
- Link directs to a website with a URL that differs from the brand's official domain
- Checkout page uses an unusual payment processor or requests payment by bank transfer
- No evidence the TikTok account is referenced from the brand's verified accounts
How to protect yourself
- Verify any brand sale by checking the brand's official website directly, not via a TikTok link
- Check that the linked website URL matches the brand's official domain exactly
- Search the brand's official social media accounts to confirm the sale is genuine
- Never pay via bank transfer or cryptocurrency for retail purchases
- Report impersonation accounts to TikTok and to the brand's official customer service
How to report it
- Report the TikTok account for impersonation using the in-app report feature
- Notify the genuine brand's customer service or intellectual property team
- File a consumer complaint with your national trading standards or consumer protection body
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a brand's official TikTok account to verify a sale?
Search the brand name on TikTok and look for the verified blue-tick account. Cross-reference the TikTok handle shown on the brand's official website. Any account promoting a sale that is not mentioned by the verified account should be treated with caution.
