Fake Cash App Chargeback Trap Scam
Fraudsters send fake Cash App payment confirmations to sellers, then dispute the charge — or never paid at all — while mimicking Cash App notifications to delay the seller.
Part of: Chargeback Traps
Last reviewed: 8 June 2026
Cash App payments are instant and, for most peer-to-peer transactions, irreversible. Scammers use this against sellers by sending a screenshot of a fake Cash App payment notification rather than actually sending money, claiming the funds are 'pending' due to a verification step. The seller ships the goods, then discovers no payment ever arrived.
A second variant involves genuine payment followed by an illegitimate dispute. Because Cash App links to a debit card or bank account, a scammer can occasionally claw back funds through their bank while keeping any goods received. The fake Cash App emails that follow the dispute are designed to mislead sellers into believing the matter is under review rather than already resolved against them.
Cash App's official position is that payments are not subject to a 'pending verification' hold for sellers — once a payment arrives, it is available. Any message claiming otherwise is a fabrication.
How this scam works on the Cash App brand
In the screenshot variant, a buyer sends the seller a carefully edited image of a Cash App payment confirmation. The image shows the seller's $cashtag, the agreed amount, and a green confirmation tick. The seller, unfamiliar with Cash App's near-instant settlement, waits for the funds and ships the item. No payment was ever sent.
In the chargeback variant, a real payment is made, the item is received, and the buyer then contacts their bank to dispute the charge as 'unauthorised.' Cash App has limited ability to reverse bank-initiated chargebacks, so the funds are pulled back automatically. The scammer may simultaneously send the seller a fake Cash App email saying the matter is 'under review' — buying time while the chargeback finalises.
Sellers of physical goods — second-hand electronics, concert tickets, and pets — are disproportionately targeted because goods cannot be recovered once shipped.
Common red flags
- A buyer sends you a screenshot of a payment rather than you seeing the funds arrive in your Cash App balance.
- You receive an email about a payment 'pending verification' — Cash App does not hold payments pending seller verification.
- The Cash App notification email comes from a domain other than cash.app or square.com.
- A buyer insists on 'Cash App only' for a high-value item sold to a stranger.
- The notification says the payment requires you to upgrade to a 'business account' to receive it.
- The buyer is unusually eager to close the transaction before you have checked your balance.
- A dispute notice arrives by email rather than as a notification inside the Cash App.
How to protect yourself
- Always check your actual Cash App balance before releasing goods — do not trust screenshots or emails.
- For high-value sales to strangers, use a platform with buyer/seller escrow or meet in person after verifying payment.
- Be aware that Cash App Friends and Family transfers offer no purchase protection, making them unsuitable for commerce.
- Enable Cash App notifications so you see real payments arrive in real time.
- If a buyer insists on a payment method you cannot instantly verify, treat it as a red flag.
- Never ship an item on the same day as a first-time Cash App payment from an unknown person.
How to report it
- Report fraud inside Cash App: Profile icon > Support > Report a Payment Issue.
- If a dispute email is suspicious, forward it to [email protected].
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- File with ic3.gov if significant funds were lost.
- Contact your bank if a debit card linked to Cash App was charged without authorisation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Cash App hold payments pending verification from the seller?
No. When a Cash App payment completes, it is immediately reflected in the recipient's balance. Any message claiming a payment is 'pending seller verification' is a scam.
Can a Cash App buyer chargeback a completed payment?
If the buyer linked a debit card or bank account, their financial institution may process a chargeback independently of Cash App. This is one reason Cash App is risky for peer-to-peer commerce with strangers.
Is there anything that makes Cash App safer for selling goods?
Cash App is designed for personal payments between people who trust each other. For selling goods to strangers, platforms that offer escrow, buyer/seller protection, or transaction guarantees are safer choices.
