Fake Cash App Customer Support Scams
Fraudsters pose as Cash App support agents — often found through fake social-media posts and search-engine ads — and trick users into sharing their sign-in codes or sending money to 'verify' their accounts. Cash App has no public support phone number, making impersonation especially effective.

Cash App is a frequent target for support impersonation because the app's genuine customer-support model is entirely in-app and in-email — there is no official Cash App phone number you can call or that will call you. This gap is exploited by criminals who create fake helpline numbers, Twitter/X accounts, and Facebook pages using Cash App's logo and branding.
Victims typically reach these fake support channels after searching online for help, posting a complaint on social media, or responding to a comment from a fake 'Cash App Support' account. The fraudster then offers to help resolve the issue over the phone or via a screen-sharing app, during which they ask the victim to navigate to their $Cashtag settings and share the sign-in verification code that arrives by SMS.
Once they have that code, fraudsters can log in, change the linked email address, and drain the balance. Some variants involve the fraudster asking the victim to temporarily send funds to a 'verification wallet' that is under fraudster control, promising the money will be returned once the account is 'unlocked'.
How this scam works on the Cash App brand
Real Cash App support is reached only through the app itself (Profile icon > Support) or at cash.app/help on a browser. Cash App staff will never call you out of the blue, never ask for your sign-in code or PIN, and never ask you to send money to yourself or anyone else to verify your account.
The fake-support version begins on social media or via a paid search ad. The fake agent sounds professional and may reference your public $Cashtag to seem credible (your $Cashtag is public information, not proof of legitimacy). They may send a screenshot of a fake 'pending verification' screen and explain that a small payment or verification code is needed to release your funds.
Some attackers install remote-access tools such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer on the victim's device under the guise of 'walking them through the fix', then silently navigate the open Cash App session to transfer money out.
Common red flags
- A phone number advertised as 'Cash App customer support' — Cash App has no inbound phone number
- A 'support agent' found via a social-media comment or DM rather than through the app
- Request for your sign-in code, PIN, or full debit-card number
- Instruction to send money to a wallet or $Cashtag to 'verify' or 'unlock' your account
- Pressure to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or another screen-sharing app
- The agent references your $Cashtag as proof they are legitimate — this is public information
- Any promise that sent funds will be returned once verification is complete
How to protect yourself
- Access Cash App support only through the app: tap your profile icon, then Support
- Never share your SMS sign-in code with anyone — it is a one-time authentication token
- Enable the Security Lock in Cash App settings so every payment requires Face ID, fingerprint, or PIN
- Do not install any remote-access software at the request of someone claiming to be support
- Treat any 'verification payment' request as an immediate scam signal — Cash App will never ask this
- Search for Cash App's real contact page at cash.app/help rather than using a number from a search ad
- Report fake support accounts to the relevant social platform using its impersonation-report tool
How to report it
- Report inside Cash App: Profile > Support > Something Else > Report a Scam
- Email Cash App's support at [email protected] with details of the fraudulent account
- Report fake social-media accounts directly to Twitter/X, Facebook, or Instagram using the platform's impersonation tool
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- If money was stolen, report to your state's consumer protection office and the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov
Frequently asked questions
Does Cash App have a customer service phone number?
No. Cash App does not operate an inbound or outbound customer-service phone line. Any number presented as 'Cash App support' is fraudulent. Contact Cash App exclusively through the app or cash.app/help.
Why do scammers target Cash App specifically?
Cash App payments between individuals are generally instant and not reversible, which means money transferred to a fraudster cannot easily be recalled. Combined with the absence of a phone support line, this creates an environment scammers exploit heavily.
Can I get my money back after a Cash App scam?
Cash App can investigate reports of fraud but cannot guarantee recovery, especially for payments you authorised yourself. Report the scam immediately, contact your bank if a linked card was charged, and file a complaint with the FTC.
