Cash App does not natively send invoices — it is a peer-to-peer payment tool, not an invoicing platform. Nevertheless, criminals send fabricated invoice-style documents or emails that closely mimic Cash App notifications, claiming the recipient owes money for a subscription, service charge, or transaction fee.
The psychological trick is that the message looks like a routine Cash App payment request. Recipients who use Cash App regularly may assume a genuine payment was triggered by a service they subscribe to, and pay without investigating. Others are threatened with account suspension or legal fees if the invoice is not settled within the hour.
Because Cash App payments are irreversible peer-to-peer transfers, any money sent to the scammer's $cashtag is extremely difficult to recover.
How this scam works on the Cash App brand
The email variant copies Cash App's green-and-white branding and states that 'a payment of $X is due for your Cash App business plan' or 'you owe a transaction reversal fee.' A Pay Now button links to either a fake Cash App login page or directly to the scammer's $cashtag payment link.
The SMS variant is briefer: 'Cash App: Your account has an unpaid balance of $49.99. Pay now to avoid suspension: [link].' The link leads to a phishing page or a direct payment request from the scammer's Cash App account.
In both cases the real Cash App has no knowledge of any outstanding invoice. Checking the Activity tab inside the app reveals no payment due. Any request to pay a Cash App 'invoice' that did not originate from a known contact inside the app itself should be treated with extreme scepticism.
