Fake Cash App Gift Card Drain Scam
Scammers impersonating Cash App claim users owe a fee, tax, or verification payment that must be paid by purchasing gift cards and sharing the codes — mirroring the classic gift-card demand scam but using Cash App's name to add apparent urgency and legitimacy.

Gift card demand scams are well known enough that Cash App itself has issued warnings about them. Yet criminals continue to run these schemes using Cash App impersonation precisely because the combination of an urgent account issue and a familiar payment brand is effective at overwhelming victims' usual caution.
The contact typically arrives as a call or text claiming that the victim's Cash App account has been restricted, has a negative balance, or is under investigation for suspicious activity. The 'agent' says that the fastest way to resolve the restriction or clear the balance is to purchase a specific type and value of gift card — commonly iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon cards — and share the numbers on the back.
Cash App's own public awareness materials explicitly state that Cash App will never ask users to purchase gift cards. This warning has been incorporated into Cash App's in-app educational content precisely because this scam is widespread. The only resolution for any genuine Cash App account issue is through the in-app support flow — never through a gift card.
How this scam works on the Cash App brand
Cash App account restrictions and negative balances are handled exclusively through the app's support flow. There is no resolution process that involves purchasing gift cards from a retail store. If a Cash App account has a negative balance from a reversed payment, the resolution involves the account holder's next incoming payment or a direct repayment through Cash App — not an external gift-card purchase.
The fraudster's instructions are specific about the gift card: denomination, brand, and where to buy them. They may instruct the victim to go to a specific type of store (pharmacy, supermarket, electronics retailer) and to purchase multiple cards if a single card does not cover the full fabricated debt. They will typically stay on the phone throughout to prevent the victim from pausing to verify.
Some variants add a layer of urgency by claiming that legal action will begin if payment is not made immediately, or that Cash App's systems will permanently close the account and pursue the balance through a collections agency. These threats are fabricated.

Frequently asked questions
Does Cash App ever require gift card payments for account issues?
No. Cash App explicitly states it will never ask users to purchase gift cards to resolve account restrictions, negative balances, or any other issue. This instruction is included in Cash App's own fraud-awareness materials.
Can a Cash App account have a negative balance?
A Cash App account can temporarily show a negative balance if a payment made by the account holder is reversed after the funds were spent. Resolution involves the account holder's next incoming payment — not a gift card. If you are unsure about your balance, check the app directly.
Why do scammers prefer gift cards over bank transfers?
Gift card codes are like cash: once shared, the balance is typically transferred immediately and is extremely difficult to trace or reverse. Unlike bank transfers, there is no reclaim window or banking institution to contact for a reversal.
