Facebook gaming groups and Marketplace are frequently used to trade discounted game keys, creating an opening for fraudsters who insert themselves as apparently credible resellers. Unlike professional grey-market platforms, these Facebook-based sales offer no buyer protection and no structured verification of sellers.
Victims pay and receive a key that fails to redeem, either because it was already used, is a random string, or because it was purchased with a stolen payment method and subsequently revoked by the publisher.
How this scam works on Facebook
A seller posts in a game group or on Marketplace offering keys at 20–40% below the standard retail price, citing a bundle purchase, a beta key surplus, or a developer connection. Buyers who message receive a quick response and a payment request via bank transfer or gift card.
Once payment is received, either no key is provided, a non-working key is sent, or a working key is delivered that is later revoked. The seller either blocks the buyer or claims the key was valid when sent.
Some sellers conduct a small number of legitimate sales first to build a positive review history on Marketplace before escalating to larger fraudulent sales.
Common red flags
- Key price is well below any established reseller or publisher storefront
- Payment requested via gift card, crypto, or bank transfer with no dispute option
- Seller has recently created account or thin Marketplace review history
- Seller refuses to provide the key first with payment on confirmation of redemption
- No verifiable source for the bulk keys being offered
- Multiple identical listings appearing in several Facebook groups simultaneously
How to protect yourself
- Buy game keys only from established platforms with buyer guarantee policies
- For private sales, insist on paying after the key is confirmed valid in your account
- Use a payment method with chargeback rights if any private key purchase is unavoidable
- Redeem keys immediately and report any failure before the dispute window closes
- Check seller feedback across multiple platforms before trusting Facebook reviews alone
- Be alert to sellers who build a short positive history before executing a larger fraud
How to report it
- Report the Facebook Marketplace listing or post using the built-in report function
- Initiate a payment dispute with your bank or card issuer promptly
- Report to the game publisher if the key was purchased with stolen payment credentials
Frequently asked questions
How quickly should I try to redeem a purchased game key?
Immediately. If the key fails, contact the seller and your payment provider within the same session. The sooner you raise a dispute, the more likely a resolution is achievable.
