Instagram is used by both legitimate grey-market key resellers and fraudulent operators who clone their aesthetic. The challenge for buyers is distinguishing between the two: both types of account post similar product imagery and claim verified stock.
Buyers who purchase through Instagram DM or link-in-bio stores — outside established buyer-protection platforms — are exposed to fraud. The platform's lack of transaction protections means recovery is difficult once payment is made.
How this scam works on Instagram
A fake key store builds an Instagram account with regular posts featuring new releases at discounted prices. A link-in-bio store collects payment, then delivers keys via DM. The keys either fail immediately or are later revoked because they were purchased with a stolen credit card.
Some operators create temporary promotional accounts around major game releases, capitalising on launch-day demand. They collect payment from many buyers quickly before the account is flagged, then disappear.
Direct message upsells are also used: the account contacts followers with a 'special deal' on an upcoming release, collecting pre-orders that yield nothing.
Common red flags
- Key prices significantly below established grey-market platforms
- Payment collected via DM or link-in-bio without any formal buyer protection
- Account was created recently with posts clustering around a game launch
- No return or refund policy stated
- Keys delivered immediately by DM — suggesting pre-generated invalid strings
- Comments are disabled or moderated to prevent public complaints from appearing
How to protect yourself
- Buy keys from established grey-market platforms with published buyer guarantees
- Do not purchase via Instagram DM or unprotected link-in-bio stores
- Redeem any purchased key immediately and test validity before the dispute window closes
- Use a payment method with chargeback rights rather than irreversible transfers
- Report invalid keys and the associated Steam or Epic account to the platform
- Search the Instagram account name on scam-reporting communities before purchasing
How to report it
- Report the Instagram account via 'Report > It's a scam'
- Initiate a chargeback with your card provider immediately
- Report to the game platform if keys from fraudulent purchases affected your account status
Frequently asked questions
Why do game keys bought from Instagram sometimes work at first and then stop?
Keys purchased with stolen credit cards initially activate successfully, but when the card fraud is detected, the publisher removes the purchased content. The revocation can happen days or weeks after redemption.
