Telegram hosts hundreds of game key trading channels that range from legitimate community operations to outright fraud. The platform's lack of real-name verification and the ease of creating new channels or bots makes it a convenient environment for key scammers who can abandon a channel after it receives too many complaints and immediately launch a new one.
Buyers attracted by below-market prices transfer payment via crypto or peer-to-peer apps before discovering the keys are invalid. By the time they attempt to dispute the transaction, the channel may already be gone.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel is built up over days or weeks with a mix of legitimate key sales and planted positive reviews from alt accounts. When the channel has enough subscribers to generate significant revenue, the operator runs a large sale, collects payments, sends invalid or recycled keys, and then abandons the channel.
Bots are also used to automate the fraud: users pay a bot, receive an automated key delivery, and the bot confirms the transaction. When the key fails to redeem, support requests go unanswered and the bot is taken down.
Some operators target Steam specifically, sending keys that work initially but are later revoked because the original purchase was made with a stolen credit card, resulting in the buyer's account being flagged.
Common red flags
- Channel prices are well below any legitimate key marketplace
- Payment only via crypto or direct P2P transfer with no refund option
- Key delivery is automated by a bot with no human support available
- Channel was recently created or has a sudden surge in sales activity
- Vouches appear clustered in time suggesting coordinated fake reviews
- No verifiable track record on established gaming community reputation sites
How to protect yourself
- Purchase game keys from publishers directly or from established grey-market platforms with buyer guarantees
- If trading on Telegram, use only channels with verifiable multi-year track records referenced by known communities
- Never pay via cryptocurrency to an anonymous channel with no recourse
- Redeem keys immediately and test them before the dispute window closes
- Report charged-back keys to Steam or Epic support so your account is not penalised
- Check a channel's history on community reputation trackers before purchasing
How to report it
- Report the Telegram channel or bot via the menu and select 'Report > Fraud'
- Notify the game platform support team about charged-back or revoked keys
- Post a factual warning in legitimate gaming communities to alert other potential victims
Frequently asked questions
Why do some game keys get revoked after I redeem them?
Keys purchased with a stolen credit card are revoked when the legitimate cardholder disputes the charge. The platform removes the key from the account it was redeemed on. This can happen days or weeks after redemption, and the buyer has no easy recourse against the anonymous seller.
