Reddit has several active communities dedicated to game trades and game key sales, attracting both bargain hunters and people with surplus keys from bundles. The subreddit format — with user flair, trade history, and moderator oversight — creates a structured trading environment that scammers work to infiltrate and imitate.
Flare systems in trading subreddits are designed to signal trustworthiness but can be manipulated by operators who conduct small, legitimate trades to accumulate positive flair before executing a large-scale fraud.
How this scam works on Reddit
A user posts keys for a sought-after game at a price slightly below the going rate on major key reseller platforms — compelling without being immediately suspicious. After payment via a non-reversible method, the buyer attempts to redeem the key and finds it is invalid, already claimed, or regional-locked to an incompatible market.
Some Reddit key scams operate at scale: a single account works through a subreddit's buyer pool methodically, delivering occasionally valid keys to maintain a positive reputation before eventually sending a large batch of invalid ones and abandoning the account.
Keys obtained through fraudulent credit card purchases are also circulated on Reddit: they appear valid initially but are revoked by the game platform after the original fraud is detected, leaving the Reddit buyer with a non-working game.
Common red flags
- Keys for in-demand new releases at prices meaningfully below established grey-market rates
- Payment requested via cryptocurrency or friends-and-family transfers only
- Flair history contains gaps or a sudden increase in positive trades shortly before a large listing
- Key provided as a screenshot or image rather than plain text
- Seller cannot explain how they obtained the keys in a verifiable way
- Key activates initially but the game is later removed from your library
How to protect yourself
- Buy game keys through established authorised resellers with consumer protection policies
- Redeem any key immediately after receipt, while you are still in contact with the seller
- Check that key-selling accounts in trading subreddits have flair that spans multiple years, not a recent spike
- Avoid keys sold at prices that require an implausible sourcing explanation — very cheap keys are often stolen
- Use a payment method with chargeback rights even when paying small amounts for digital goods
How to report it
- Report the Reddit post and account to the subreddit's moderators immediately
- Report the key to the game platform's fraud team so they can trace the source and take action
- File a report with your national consumer protection authority if money was lost
Frequently asked questions
Why do fraudulently obtained game keys sometimes work initially before being revoked?
Keys bought with stolen payment cards are initially valid because the original transaction completes before the card holder disputes it. Once the fraud is detected and the payment reversed, the game platform revokes the key — which may be weeks after the Reddit buyer has already used it, leaving the Reddit buyer out of pocket.
