Fake Microsoft 365 Subscription Trap Scam
Scammers create lookalike Microsoft 365 sign-up pages and mobile apps that enroll victims in expensive recurring charges while providing no real Microsoft 365 access.

Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is a subscription service offering Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and cloud storage. Legitimate subscriptions are purchased at microsoft.com/microsoft-365 or through authorised retailers and app stores. Microsoft's own apps — Word, Excel, Outlook — are free to download; the subscription unlocks full editing features.
Criminals replicate the Microsoft 365 landing page experience to sell fake subscriptions or to harvest credit card details. The widespread use of Microsoft 365 in both personal and professional settings — and users' familiarity with paying annual or monthly subscription fees — makes this a credible phishing premise.
App stores also host lookalike 'Microsoft Office' apps with confusing names that trigger subscription charges without providing real Microsoft software.
How this scam works on the Microsoft brand
A user searching for 'Microsoft 365 cheap' or 'Office 365 discount' clicks a search ad leading to a site at a domain like ms365-offer.com or microsoftoffice-deal.net. The page offers Microsoft 365 Family for a fraction of the real price. After entering payment details, the victim is charged and receives credentials that either do not work or grant access to a pirated service that may be shut down at any time.
In the app store variant, a productivity app named 'Office Suite for Microsoft 365' charges a weekly subscription after a misleading 'free' setup. The app itself is a basic document viewer unrelated to Microsoft.
some campaigns use email notifications claiming a victim's Microsoft 365 subscription has expired, linking to a fake renewal page that collects the card number.
Common red flags
- Microsoft 365 is only purchased at microsoft.com/microsoft-365 or through authorised stores — not via search ads linking to unfamiliar domains.
- Prices dramatically below Microsoft's published pricing are a strong indicator of fraud.
- Microsoft's own Word, Excel, and Outlook apps are published in app stores under 'Microsoft Corporation' — verify the developer name.
- Third-party 'Microsoft Office' apps charging a subscription are not affiliated with Microsoft.
- A renewal email links to a domain other than microsoft.com or account.microsoft.com.
- You receive a one-time-purchase offer for a product Microsoft only sells as a subscription.
How to protect yourself
- Purchase or renew Microsoft 365 only at microsoft.com/microsoft-365 or through the Microsoft Store app.
- Verify app developer names in app stores — Microsoft publishes all official Office apps under 'Microsoft Corporation.'
- If you paid a fraudulent site, dispute the charge with your card issuer and report to the FTC.
- Check your real Microsoft 365 subscription status at account.microsoft.com.
- Report fake apps to Apple App Store or Google Play using their in-store reporting tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy Microsoft 365 cheaper through third-party sites?
Authorised resellers may occasionally offer discounted codes, but purchasing from unverified sites risks receiving invalid keys, stolen subscription credentials, or persistent fraudulent charges. Stick to microsoft.com or known authorised retailers.
How do I verify a Microsoft 365 product key?
Genuine Microsoft 365 product keys are redeemed at setup.microsoft.com. If a key is rejected there, it is invalid, counterfeit, or already used.
Is Microsoft 365 available as a one-time purchase?
Microsoft does offer Office Home & Student as a one-time purchase, but this is separate from Microsoft 365. Any site selling 'Microsoft 365 lifetime' is not selling a legitimate Microsoft product.
