Fake Revolut Debt Collection Scam

Revolut may hold funds, restrict accounts, or charge fees under specific circumstances — for instance, if a payment is reversed by the sender's bank, leaving the account in a brief negative state, or if a subscription fee fails to collect. Scammers are aware of these edge cases and craft fake debt notices that sound plausible to Revolut users who have experienced similar real notifications.
The fake collections contact typically arrives by email or phone, referencing a specific account balance owed. The tone is professional but escalating — first a polite reminder, then a threat of credit reporting, then a warning of legal proceedings. Each message is designed to pull the victim toward making a payment before they take time to verify the claim.
Revolt's real account communications always appear in the app's notification feed. Any claim of a Revolut debt that cannot be confirmed inside the app is fabricated.
How this scam works on the Revolut brand
A text message arrives: 'REVOLUT: Your account has an outstanding balance of $[amount]. Failure to pay by [date] will result in your account being closed and the balance reported to credit agencies. Settle now: [link].' The link goes to a fake Revolut login page or a payment form.
In the phone variant, the caller says they are from Revolut's account compliance team and explains that a recent card transaction was reversed by the bank, leaving a negative balance. They request the user's card details to 'apply the settlement payment' and clear the balance before it is escalated.
Some variants use WhatsApp, sending a message from a number with 'Revolut' as the contact name (set by the scammer), which looks like an official communication on devices that do not display sender phone numbers prominently.
Common red flags
- Your Revolut app shows no negative balance or restriction notice.
- The contact arrives via SMS, phone, or WhatsApp rather than through the Revolut app notification centre.
- Payment is requested via card details over phone or through an external link.
- The caller or message mentions credit bureau reporting for a debt below the amount that would trigger such action.
- The from-number or email address is not an official Revolut channel (check revolut.com for real contact details).
- The debt amount seems designed to be low enough that you might just pay without questioning it.
- The message urges you to keep the matter private and not discuss it with others.

Frequently asked questions
Can my Revolut account go negative?
In rare cases — such as a payment reversal arriving after your balance has been spent — Revolut may show a brief negative balance. This is communicated through the app, not via cold calls or unsolicited texts.
Does Revolut report unpaid balances to credit agencies?
Revolut may do so in extreme cases after following its own internal collections process, which is fully communicated through the app and registered email. An unsolicited first contact threatening credit reporting is not how this process starts.
Is a WhatsApp message from 'Revolut' genuinely from Revolut?
No. Revolut does not use WhatsApp as an official customer contact channel. Any WhatsApp message claiming to be from Revolut is fraudulent.
